What in the hell did that mean?

"I just have a lot to do. I still have to take my paperwork to Sal and then write up a report about what happened before I can even think about heading home. Honestly? I just want a nap."

Skip chuckled. "I think I can understand that." He grabbed his clipboard and started toward the door. "Tell Sal I've picked out the color for my yacht."

"Uh..."

Skip waved a hand at me. "He'll know what I'm talking about."

Okay then.

I admit I was a little curious but not enough to stop the handsome doctor from walking out of the exam room. Now I just had to wait for the nurse, and then I was so out of here.

"Here you go." Jean walked in with a small stack of papers. "You can get these filled downstairs in the pharmacy."

"Thanks, man." I took everything, rolled it up, and then stuck it inside one of the pockets on my pants. "Only a million more things to do before I can go home."

"Police work keep you pretty busy?"

"Oh, you don't know the half of it. If it's not druggies taking stabs at me, it's my commander's husband falling down the stairs or getting kidnapped or shot or sat on by an elephant. It's insane."

When I turned to look at the nurse, he was standing there with wide eyes and a jaw hanging down to his chest. I chuckled because I'd seen that look on people's faces before.

"Lany Delvecchio is a really nice guy, and he adores his husband and kids, but the man is a walking clusterfuck. He could end up with a concussion just from inhaling air."

"I've heard the stories, of course. I just didn't think they could all be real."

"Oh, they're real all right, and you probably haven't heard half of them. I've only known the guy for about ten years, but I have no idea how he made it to adulthood. There's a reason he has a panic button in every room of his house. He needs them."

Jean shuddered. "I think I'd rather work in the emergency room during a fifty car pileup."

I grinned. "Probably safer."

I walked out of the room with a surprising clip in my step. I was pretty sure it was due to the fact that I was leaving the ER. I stopped briefly at the pharmacy to fill my prescriptions and then made my way outside, only to realize I had no way to get back to the office. I'd been dropped off by a squad car.

Well, damn.

I pulled out my cell phone and dialed Officer Sam Brodsky. He was the one I was usually paired with when we were out in the field. "Hey, Brodsky, any chance you can come and get me?"

"Yeah, I can be there in about twenty minutes," Brodsky replied. "I just have to finish this report up and get it to Sal."

"Thanks, man. I'd appreciate it." I really didn't want to take a taxi. "I'm outside the emergency room."

"How'd it go?"

"Couple of stitches, nothing major, but I have the next twenty-four hours off. You and Angelo want to hit the bar?"

"Sorry, we're having an early night at home with Cole. Angelo has to fly out to London in the morning, so we're having family night before he leaves."

It was weird thinking about Brodsky being a family man. He and Angelo had a kid and everything. Technically, Cole was Angelo's kid, but since they were engaged to get married and living together, I figured it was as good as done.

"How long is he going to be gone?"

"Shouldn't be more than a few days."

That was going to suck. Brodsky was always a little grumpy when Angelo went away on business. Usually, by the time Angelo got home, I was ready to shove Brodsky down a garbage chute.

"I'm going to go so I can get this report done and turned in. I'll see you in a few."
