More than one uniformed officer turned to watch as the five powerful men walked through the parking garage. They weren't in full SWAT gear, but they were easily identifiable as officers by the guns at their hips, the badges hanging on chains around their necks, and the black T-shirts with SWAT written on the back.
The massive muscles didn't hurt.
"Report," Sal said as soon as he reached us.
"Skip and I were leaving the hospital to come by the house," I started. "When we reached this floor, Skip used his key fob remote to turn on the car. It exploded."
That was basically it.
"Was there any sign it had been tampered with before it exploded?" Sal asked.
"I didn't get close enough to check."
Sal glanced at Skip. "Could this have been that Jean guy?"
"I have no idea, Sal." Skip sounded a little shell-shocked. "Seriously, Jean seemed perfectly normal until he went off the rails about three months ago. It was out of the blue."
"So, he could have done this?"
"I just don't know."
"Has anyone else been threatening you?"
Skip shrugged. "I get the occasional angry patient or family member, but nothing I'd even report. People get upset when they don't get medical treatment right away or don't get the treatment they think they should get. Family members get upset when patients die or they don't hear the news they expect. It happens. It's a fact of life for a doctor."
"What about personally?"
Skip's eyebrows lifted. "Personally?"
"Anyone in your personal life threatening you? A former lover or anything?"
"Uh..." Skip glanced toward me for a moment before shaking his head. "No, no one I can think of."
"Skip hasn't dated anyone except me in the last two years."
The words just came out before I could stop them.
Sal's eyebrows lifted as he glanced between me and Skip. "You two are dating?"
"Yes," I said.
"No," Skip said at the same time.
"Well, which is it?" Sal asked. "Yes or no?"
"We're dating," I said, "but it's a work in progress."
"I see."
I doubted it.
I didn't.
"Joe still has a bit of digging to do before we have the full picture on this Jean character."
I glanced at Officer Joseph Santiago. He was the newest member of our team, having taken over the tech spot when Lyn resigned and went to work for the FBI's Cyber Crimes Division. He'd been on the team long enough for us to make friends, but I wasn't as close to him as I was to the others. We hadn't been through the same years of experience together.
"What have you found so far, Joe?" I asked.
