"We need to talk to Sal."

"Why?"

"Because he can get this guy put behind bars or get the D.A. to make this a priority case at the very least. Whatever it takes to make sure you're safe."

The sentiment was nice, but... "David—"

David ignored me and pulled his phone out. Sure determination was in the firm set of his jaw as he dialed someone and then held the phone up to his ear. "Sal, it’s Wu. I need you and the guys to come down to the ER. Skip is in trouble."

My jaw dropped.

"He's being stalked by some nurse who used to work here. The guy's already tried to assault him once, and tonight he snuck into the hospital and tried to shoot me up with something. Security is looking for him, but if he got into the hospital unseen, I'm pretty sure he can get out."

Oh, I hadn't thought of that part.

"His name is Jean Keller, and he was a nurse here before he got fired. You might want to get Joe on that." David nodded a couple of times before saying, "Okay, I'll wait here until he's done and then bring him over."

David hung up and slid his phone into his pocket before looking at me. "I'm supposed to wait here until you get off shift and then take you over to the house."

"Look, this is really—"

"It's not up for debate."

I crossed my arms and glared. "If I remember correctly, I am still an adult."

David cocked an eyebrow then chuckled when I rolled my eyes.

"You know I'm right, Skip."

Maybe, but I wasn't ready to admit that yet.

"Let us help you," David said. "That's what we do."

My shoulders slumped. "Fine, I'll agree to go over to the house with you, but don't think that means you get to make all the decisions. Despite what you may think, I am an adult."

David's smirk was as sexy as it was aggravating. "I am well aware of that."

"I'll see if I can call in another doctor to cover the rest of my shift so we can go."

"You mean after we talk to the police and get those syringes tested."

"Yes."

This was going to be a very long day.

It took another three hours to get a doctor in to cover my shift, talk to the police and file a report, and get the syringes down to the lab to be tested. I was pretty sure if David hadn't been standing with me when the police questioned me, they would have barely taken my statement. They didn't seem to think this was a big deal.

By the time I changed into street clothes and then went to get David so we could go, I was wishing I was headed home. My emotions were all over the place and not all because of Jean. Spending more time around David was not in my best interests.

I was terrified I'd say the wrong thing or—god forbid—reach for the man when I knew he didn't want that. As much as I dreamed about that night every time I closed my eyes, I knew it had been a mistake because now I couldn't stop thinking about it.

"Are you ready to go?" I asked David when I reached him. He'd been sitting in a chair by the emergency room doors, waiting. "Did you bring a car?"

David shook his head. "Brodsky dropped me off."

"My car is out in the employee garage. We can take that to the house."

David got up and started walking with me.
