"Are you Officer Wu's nurse?" I asked.
"Yes, Doctor."
"What were in those syringes?" I pointed to the ones still on the floor.
"Dr. Leigh ordered tetanus and antibiotics for the patient."
"She's telling the truth, Skip," David said. "She's the nurse who checked me in, and the doctor did order those shots."
"Okay." My hand was shaking as I pushed it through my head. "Dispose of those and get new ones. Until further notice, I am taking over Officer Wu's care. I don't want any other nurse treating him except you. Understood?"
"Yes, Doctor."
"Bring me a suture kit and a local so I can sew Officer Wu up and get him on his way."
"Yes, Doctor." The nurse squatted down and grabbed both syringes and then carried them out of the room.
"What in the hell is going on, Skip?"
I sighed. I'd been avoiding this conversation. "Jean didn't seem to like it when I turned him down, and he started causing a lot of trouble."
"Which is why you don't date people you work with."
"Exactly."
"So, what happened?"
"I ended up having to file a complaint with the hospital board when he wouldn't leave me alone. They suspended him, so he started waiting for me outside when I got off work and then showing up at my house and the market down the street from my house. Pretty much anywhere I went."
David grimaced. "I get the picture."
"I finally had to file a restraining order against him. When he came to the hospital and tried to assault me in the doctor's lounge, the hospital fired him and I had the police file charges against him for sexual assault and stalking."
"Then why in the hell is he out walking the streets?"
"He's out on bond at the moment. As you heard me tell security, he's not supposed to be within five hundred feet of me or this hospital." I held up one of the syringes. "Which really makes me wonder what is in this."
David paled. "You and me both."
"Once the police get here and I make a report, I can send it to the lab and have it tested."
"Skip—"
The door opened and the nurse walked back in with a suture kit and a tray with three syringes on it. "Doctor?"
"Thank you, nurse. You can go."
"Yes, Doctor."
I set the tray down on the moveable table and pulled it close to the side of the bed then grabbed the doctor's stool and pulled it over. Before I sat down, I pulled the old glove off and tossed it in the trash, washed my hands, and then grabbed a fresh set of gloves.
I sat down, grabbed an alcohol swap, and wiped down the area around David's wound. Once it was all clean, I gave him a shot in a couple of different areas to numb it up. I tapped him with the end of the needle. "Can you feel that?"
David shook his head. "No."
"Good." I would hate to cause David pain or discomfort. I grabbed the surgical needle and started sewing up the wound. It only took a few passes before it was closed. I made sure the wound was cared for and covered before standing up. I gave him the other two shots that had been ordered for him and then pulled my gloves off. I tossed them in the garbage as I walked over to rinse my hands off.
Now that David had been treated, I really hoped he'd leave. I had enough on my plate without dealing with him.
