They wouldn't be the first.
After the nurse finished cleaning my wound, she took my vitals and then wrote everything down in a chart. She smiled at me when she was all done. "The doctor should be in to see you soon."
"Do you know who is on duty tonight?"
"I'm afraid I don't. I just came on duty. I haven't had a chance to check yet."
Fantastic.
"Thank you," I said.
The nurse nodded and then put the chart in the holder next to the door and walked out, leaving me to sweat it out alone. I laid my bad arm over my stomach and propped the other one behind my head and just stared up at the ceiling.
I could think of so many other places I'd rather be at the moment, even back fighting with the jackass who'd given me my wound.
"Officer Wu?"
I glanced toward the door to see a short man with glasses and a white coat standing in the doorway, my chart in his hands. I hadn't even heard him come in.
I sat up and smiled. "Yes, I'm Officer Wu."
"I'm Dr. Leigh."
I smiled brightly because I was really glad to see him.
"So, what seems to be the problem tonight?"
I lifted my injured arm. "Perp with a Bowie knife."
"I see." The doctor set the chart down on the bottom of the exam bed and grabbed some gloves. He pulled them on as he walked back to the bed and then started probing the wound. "Well, it doesn't look too deep, but you're going to need some stitches."
"Yes, sir." "Are you current on all your shots?"
"Yes, sir."
"Well, we'd better give you a tetanus shot and some antibiotics just to be safe."
Yeah, I figured.
The doctor's fingers grazed the scar on my side. "Looks like you've done this before."
"Once or twice." I shrugged. "Hazards of the job."
And assholes with Bowie knives.
"Okay, I'm going to go get the nurse to get a tray ready, and I'll be back to sew you up in a few minutes. Your nurse should be in in a few minutes to give you your shots as well."
"Thanks, Doc."
I lay back down and went back to staring at the ceiling until the door opened again. When I looked up and saw who walked in, I tensed. As much as I didn't want to see Skip, I wanted to see this man even less.
"Good evening, Officer Wu," Jean said.
I sat up, not liking the vulnerability that came from being on my back. I didn't trust this guy any farther than I could throw him. "Jean."
The smile he sent me was plastic.
"Forget to duck again?" Jean said as he set a small tray with two syringes down on the counter.
