"Does Brasov ever come in?" I asked. I was just making conversation, but I was also curious. I kind of wanted to know as much about what was going on as possible so I never got in this position again.
"I haven't seen Brasov since the night they tossed me in here," Cam replied. "Kirk is the only one I see."
"And he's involved in this up to his neck."
Cam snorted. "Oh yeah."
I walked over and sat back down on the mattress and pulled my knees up to my chest. I plucked at the blanket for a few minutes before glancing over at Cam. "What are you going to do once you get out of here?"
"Go home."
"Texas, wasn't it?"
Cam nodded. "My parents have a bed and breakfast in Galveston. They inherited it from my grandmother, so I kind of grew up there. They wanted me to start working there full time once I graduated from high school, but I wanted to see the world." A rueful smile crossed Cam's face. "I made it as far as New York."
"How did you end up dancing here?"
"Oh, um, remember Scott?"
"Vaguely." I frowned as I tried to picture the man in my head. "I think he quit a couple of weeks after I started here."
"We met at a party hosted by a friend and started dating. We ended up moving in together until he found a sugar daddy who wanted to show him the world. He dropped me like a hot rock, leaving me with a whole lot of bills. Since I'd already met Brasov because of Scott, I went to him and asked for a job." Cam shook his head. "Dumbest move I've ever made."
"Are you sure that's what happened to Scott?"
Cam nodded. "I still hear from him now and then. He sends me pictures and shit like we're best friends instead of ex-lovers. Last I heard, Scott and his wallet were somewhere in Europe."
My mind started racing, putting together what had occurred with Scott and our current situation, and I was not liking the picture it was painting. "Do you think Brasov got the idea of selling us to rich guys because of Scott?"
Cam's head snapped around. "What?"
"Think about it. Brasov sees one of his dancers hook up with a rich guy and start traveling the world and sees an opportunity to pad his wallet by providing boy toys to rich men. He sets up a system where everyone thinks the dancer he sold has moved on to greener pastures so no one asks questions."
It made perfect sense to me.
"You don't actually think Scott had anything to do with this, do you?" Cam asked.
"I just think he was the catalyst."
There was a little bit of bitterness in Cam's voice when he said, "Scott is an ass, but I don't think he would do something like this."
I didn't know Scott well, but I didn't think he would either. This whole mess rested on Brasov's shoulders. No one else’s. And I was going to see him put out of business and wearing a nifty orange jumpsuit if it was the last thing I did.
"I know you want to go home, but we need to make sure Brasov can't do this to anyone else again. I need you to help me put him behind bars."
Cam's lips pressed together and then turned down at the corners. "I don't know if I can do that, Didi. Brasov scares me."
"So, do something about it." I kept my hands clenched in my lap. I could see how scared Cam was, but this asshat needed to be stopped, and I didn't think I could do it on my own. "If you put him behind bars, he loses his power. You get free of the boogeyman."
Cam grimaced before nodding. "Okay, Didi. I'll help you."
"It's the right thing to do, Cam. There's no telling how many people Brasov's already sold. If we can do something to stop him from selling any more, including us, we need to do it."
"No, I know that. I just..." Cam sighed and glanced away. "You know how much Brasov loves his money. He's not going to part with it without a fight."
Cam was right, and I wasn't sure what to do about that. Andrew said he had a plan. I wasn't sure he was prepared for someone as evil as Brasov. He was just a lawyer, and he wasn't even a criminal defense lawyer or a prosecutor. He worked for some company. I doubted he encountered evil file clerks.
I pulled out my cell phone and quickly tapped out a message."Please be careful. Brasov is a really bad guy. I don't want you getting hurt."
