Right.
I quickly put the phone on vibrate and then slid it into my pocket. I wished there was another place to hide it, but there was nothing in the room except the queen-sized mattress on the floor and the bucket I'd thrown up in. I didn't even want to think about what that bucket had been used for.
"Do we get bathroom breaks?"
Cam nodded. "Kirk comes in every few hours and takes me to Brasov's bathroom." He sighed heavily. "I tried to escape once. They held me down and then drugged me for two days. Fucking Kirk was in here checking on me every hour."
Yeah, I could see why he hadn't tried that again.
I stiffened when I heard the doorknob jiggle. I tried to swallow the lump forming in my throat, but my throat had gone dry.
"Don't try anything, or they'll drug us," Cam whispered right before the door opened and Kirk stepped inside the room.
The big bulky man waved his hand toward the door. "Bathroom break."
Cam and I both stood. When I started walking, I swayed a little. Cam grabbed my arm, and I was thankful. I didn't relish falling flat on my face. Cam kept a hold of my arm as we walked out of the room we'd been held in and across Brasov's office to a small bathroom.
I noticed immediately that it had a small window. I would have attempted to escape out of it except Kirk leaned against the doorframe, watching our every move.
Guess he didn't trust us.
I made sure to angle my body away from Kirk as I took care of business. I might strip down to a very tiny G-string when I danced, but I didn't like the idea of Kirk seeing everything. Once I was done, I washed my hands and then splashed some water on my face. It helped relieve the last of the grogginess I was feeling.
"Let's go," Kirk snapped.
Cam and I hurried past Kirk. I spotted my bag sitting next to Brasov's desk and reached down to grab it as I passed. I was surprised that Kirk didn't argue, but once I got back into the room and opened it up, I understood why he hadn't. Someone had gone through it. Everything was moved around and in disarray.
I jumped and swung around when the door slammed behind me. I pressed my hand to my chest, hoping it would keep my beating heart right where it was.
Cam smiled as he held up a small paper bag. "Lunch."
"What is it?"
Cam shrugged before opening the bag and looking inside. "Looks like burgers, apples, and a couple cans of soda."
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, that's real nutritious."
"I suggest you eat it and enjoy it. You're not going to want to eat the food tomorrow."
I frowned. "Why not?"
Cam walked over and sat down on the mattress before scooting back to the wall and making himself comfortable. "Because if our new owner is going to be here tomorrow, then I have no doubt that they are going to try and dope us up again. They are not going to want us fighting them."
I hated how much that made sense.
I sat down on the mattress, crossed my legs, and then reached for one of the burgers. I unwrapped it and started to take a bite but then paused. "How do we know they haven't drugged these?"
"We don't," Cam replied, "but I'd assume the drug they are giving us to make us compliant is like any other drug. Too much of it isn't good for the human body. So, I figure it wouldn't make sense to dope us now and then have to dope us again tomorrow."
That was very slim reasoning, but I was very hungry, and I knew I needed to keep up my strength. I waited until Cam had eaten his burger before biting into mine. If he'd shown any signs of being woozy, I'd have tossed the burger and gone hungry.
I felt better after I'd eaten, more like my real self. Missing dinner and breakfast was yet another thing to lay at Brasov's feet.
Yes, I was keeping a list.
There were no windows in the little room Cam and I were in, so I couldn't tell what time it was, but time seemed to drag on forever. I pulled my phone out and checked it several times. I wanted to message Andrew, but I didn't want to be too much of a bother. I'd already asked the man to rescue me.
As more time went by, I started to get edgy. I shook out my hands. At one point, I got up and started pacing the small square room. Cam just sat on the mattress leaning back against the wall. He seemed a whole lot more relaxed than I was feeling, but then, he'd been here longer than me. He'd probably already gone through the freak-out period.
