"Okay," Knox said, "we're going to break for now. Ivan, I want you and your brothers to tear apart Brasov's life. If this escalates, I want ammo to use against him. I also want you to send someone down to the club to scout around and see if they can get a lay of the land before tonight. How many guards are at the door, who comes and goes? I want the works."
Ivan nodded. "Yes, sir. We'll get started on that right away."
"Report back to me as soon as you have something," Knox said. "Until further notice, this is command central."
I’ll admit it. I was a little in awe of everything that was going on. On my word, Knox, Burke, and Crosby had roused the troops, and they were going to do everything they could to help me rescue my friend.
It was a little overwhelming.
"Lancaster." Knox glanced at me. "Is there a way to find out if there are any court cases involving Brasov or for you to find out if the police are investigating him without letting them know we're interested?"
"I have a friend I can call." Being a lawyer, especially one who worked for Silver Spoons Inc., I'd made a few friends here and there. Some I trusted, some I didn't.
"I can call my father and ask him to make a few discreet inquiries," Newt Knox, Colton Knox's husband, said.
I hadn't realized he was standing there until he spoke. As I glanced at him, I remembered that his father was a retired police officer. "As long as he won't get into trouble."
Newt shook his head. "He's got some old friends on the force he can talk to."
"Okay." Knox wrapped an arm around his husband's shoulders. "It looks like we all have stuff to do." He glanced down at his watch. "It's coming up on eight now. Why don't we all check back in at noon? That should be long enough to gather intel. I'll have Mary make us lunch."
Most nodded, but everyone except me, Knox, and Newt cleared out. I waited until the others left before looking at two of my bosses. "As much as I know we should wait until tonight, you realize we might not be able to, right? If Brasov tries to take Dalton somewhere else, we'll have to go in."
"That's why I'm sending someone down there now," Knox replied. "To keep an eye on everything that is going on down there until we can go in and get your friend."
"Okay." I couldn't ask for more than that. "I'll see you at lunch."
"You should let your friend know we're coming for him but that it might be a little while. If he thinks he's going to be moved, he needs to let you know if he can."
"I will." I wanted to make sure Dalton was still okay. I started typing as I walked out of Knox's penthouse."How are you?"
I groaned when the door closed behind me and I realized I hadn't gotten my coffee.
"When are you coming?"
"We're working on a plan now, but I probably won't be there for a few hours. I need you to warn me if you get moved."
"A few hours? I could be gone by then."
I winced. Even in typed words, I could imagine Dalton's outrage."You know Brasov isn't just going to let you go without a fight. We have to have a plan or someone is going to get hurt or worse."I grew concerned when Dalton didn't message me back."Dalton?"
"No, I get it, but you really need to hurry. Brasov is crazy, and I'm afraid of what he's going to do."
"I'm working just as fast as I can, baby."
I realized what I had typed right after I hit send, and then I groaned. I really needed to watch myself, or Dalton was going to start thinking I was just as bad as his boss.
"Just stay safe and let me know if anything happens,"I quickly typed out."I'll keep my phone with me."
"I will. Just hurry."
I smiled."I will."
I had phone calls to make so I headed for my office. I was pretty good friends with the local district attorney. We'd gone to law school together. We stayed in contact, playing golf at least once a month and racquetball once a week.
He'd be my first call.
Beyond him, I'd made sure when I started working as an attorney to play nice with the records clerk in the courthouse and a couple of the clerks who worked for judges in the courthouses around the city, both at the city level and the state level.
