"Senator!" Lex whispered loudly. He knew enough not to talk louder. "Tony, Hector, and Will are downstairs. Hector's been shot. Carson shot him."
Wilson nodded before looking toward the back door. Lex turned just in time to see the big guy with the black hair go back into the house, quietly closing the door behind him.
"Come on, we need to get away from the house."
"Tony—"
"Yancy and the sheriff will get him, don't you worry." The senator grabbed Lex's wrist and pulled him around to the back of the house then across the yard to the barn. It wasn't until they rounded the side of the barn that Lex saw all the other cars. There was even an ambulance.
"How?" Lex asked.
"Brody was in the kitchen when Carson and his bodyguards came in. He snuck out the back door just like we did and called the sheriff, who called me."
"Oh, thank god."
"I made a few phone calls of my own."
Huh?
"Do you know who Robert Carson is?
Lex shook his head. "Until a couple of weeks ago, I'd never even met the man. He tried to pick me up in a bar. When I said no, he made my life hell." He felt as if he'd said that before. "He's been tracking me. He even put cameras in my bedroom and watched me and Tony having sex. He beat me up for that and handcuffed me to my bed."
Wilson patted Lex's back. "It'll be okay. Once the sheriff catches him, Robert Carson is going to go away for a very long time."
"Who is he?" Lex asked.
"Robert Carson is the son of Michael Carson of Carson Oil."
Lex's eyes widened. No wonder Carson thought he could get away with anything. His father was filthy rich. "And you think he's going to get sent to jail?"
"Oh, he is. I can promise you that. His father has been trying to clean up his son's messes for years. This time, he picked on the wrong guy. I told his father if he didn't do something, I was going to talk to every one of my contacts on Capitol Hill and I would make sure every single one of them voted against any bill that would benefit Carson Oil. I also told him that I would use my contacts to dig up every bit of dirt I could find on him and his son—and Carson Oil has more than one skeleton in their closet—and I would give an interview to all the major media outlets."
Lex's jaw dropped. "What did he say?"
"Robert is the youngest of three sons and two daughters. Michael Carson already has an heir for his legacy. His youngest son is on his own. He's officially withdrawing all support, right down to writing his son out of the family will."
"Ouch."
Wilson shrugged. "He shouldn't have messed with my executive assistant."
Lex started to smile, but the sounds of gunfire coming from the house drew his attention. His heart climbed in his throat as he ran to the corner of the barn and peeked around the edge. He couldn't see anything from where he was, but silence had taken over.
Lex rubbed his hand over his chest. It ached as if he couldn't quite get enough air into his lungs. He'd die if anything happened to Tony. He was just now starting to understand how much the man meant to him. He didn't want to lose that.
"Lex!" someone shouted.
"Oh." Lex started to go, but Wilson grabbed his arm.
"You need to stay here until they give us the all clear, Lex."
"That's Tony." He'd know that voice anywhere. Lex pulled his hand free and took off running, or running as well as he could in his condition. When he rounded the back of the house, Tony was standing there looking around. "Tony!"
Tony's head snapped around. "Lex."
Lex ran right into his arms.
"Told you I'd see you soon," the man whispered as he hugged Lex.
