Lex shook his head. "I don't know. I didn't give it to him, but Dr. Green said it was signed and notarized."

"How did you get away?" Will asked.

Lex smiled. It wasn't a humorous situation, but he still felt some amusement. "Dr. Green had me moved to ICU and put me into a 'coma'"—he made quote marks in the air—"and then told Carson I was in a coma to keep him away from me. And then he arranged for me to meet a detective friend of his who started me on my journey here. Rain snuck me out of the hospital while the doctor distracted Carson."

"Sounds like you've had quite the ride," Hector said. "What can we do to help?"

"Call Tony." He wanted that more than he wanted anything. "And I guess call the senator. He might be able to help me out of this mess." He was the most powerful person Lex knew.

"Let's call Tony right now." Hector pulled his cell phone out and dialed a number before holding the phone up to his ear. "Oh, hey, Brody. I'm trying to get in touch with Tony. Oh."

Lex swallowed his cry when Hector glanced in his direction.

"Do you know when he's going to be back?" Hector nodded a couple of times. "Okay, yeah, if you talk to him, can you let him know that I need to speak with him as soon as possible? The…uh…the engine on my truck is sounding real bad, and I really need to get it fixed. I won't be able to get any supplies for that room I have. You know the one. It used to be Happy's room. Yeah, that one. I've got something down there right now he might be interested in, but it needs a little help to get fixed, so I need my truck."

This was the weirdest conversation Lex had ever heard.

"Yeah, that would be great, man. Thanks." Hector hung up then smiled across at him. "Brody is going to get in touch with Tony and tell him to come home. Apparently, he flew to Washington, D.C. to see his boyfriend."

Lex's eyes rounded. "Tony flew out to see me?"

For half a second, he was filled with elation, but it quickly turned to terror. "You have to call him, get him to come back. If Carson learns about him…" Lex didn't even want to think about what could happen.

"Brody is calling him. He'll get him to come back." Hector's smile was confident, more confident than Lex felt. "Let's call the senator now and then see about getting you set up in the safe room so you can rest."

Lex nodded.

It wasn't like he had anything better to do.

Chapter Twelve

Tony frowned when his phone rang. He was sitting outside Lex's apartment waiting for the man in the red sports car to show up. He'd been sitting there waiting for hours. He was starting to wonder if the guy would ever appear.

He was also kind of hoping Lex would show up.

He reached down and picked up his phone, swiped his finger across the screen, then held it up to his ear. "Hello?"

"Hey, Tony, this is Brody. I know you're busy up there and all, but I need you to come back to Cade Creek."

"I can't. I haven't found Lex yet. He wasn't at the hospital."

"Look, this is kind of an emergency. Hector's truck broke down, and he needs it fixed as soon as possible. I wouldn't have called if it wasn't important, Tony."

"Can't you do it?" The man was a mechanic after all.

"No, this job needs your special touch. In fact, I'm pretty sure you're the only one who can handle it."

Tony frowned as he looked down at the screen. Was Brody serious? "What are you talking about?" he asked as he held the phone back up to his ear. "Have you been sniffing engine oil?"

Brody chuckled. "No, but listen to me. I really need you to come home. Hector needs his truck fixed. It really is very important. I promise, once you fix his truck, you can fly back to Washington and spend as much time as you need there. I'll even pay for your flight and watch the shop as long as you need me to."

"Brody."

"As a favor to me?"

As much as he hated it, Tony knew he couldn't refuse the preacher man. Brody had done so much for him, for everyone in Cade Creek. If this was that important to him… "Okay, I'll catch the next flight home."

"Thanks, man. Call me as soon as you get back into Cade Creek."
