"Detective Rain is going to escort you out of here then take you somewhere that you will be safe." The doctor quickly raised his hand when Lex opened his mouth. "I don't know where and I don't need to know. If I know, I can be questioned. This way, no one will know except Detective Rain, and I trust him. You can, too."

Lex glanced at the Detective. "Why are you doing this?"

"Because I hate assholes."

Lex snickered. "Yeah, you and me both."

"Okay, here's what's going to happen. You and Detective Rain are going to walk out the door and head away from the waiting area. Right after that, we're going to come barreling out, headed for the surgery ward. Carson will follow us, giving you two time to get out of the hospital."

"It's imperative that you keep your head down when you walk out of here," Rain said. "I will do my best to block Carson's view of you, but you have got to keep your head down."

"Wouldn't it be easier to just wait until you guys leave?" Lex asked.

Dr. Green shook his head. "I'm too concerned that he'll try and stop us once we get out into the hallway. I'm going to try and prevent that, but I can't promise that he won't flip out."

Lex swallowed tightly. "I don't want you hurt." He would be devastated if anyone was hurt because they were trying to help him escape a madman. "Maybe this isn't such a good idea."

Dr. Green patted Lex's shoulder. "It will be fine, Lex. Just do what Detective Rain says and let me take care of the rest of this."

Lex still had misgivings, but Carson scared the crap out of him. "So, how do we do this?"

"Here." The detective handed Lex a clipboard with a bunch of papers on it then looped a stethoscope around his neck. He even went as far as sliding a pair of glasses on Lex's face. "There, that should do it. Now, when you go out the door, keep your head down like you're reading what's on the clipboard."

Right.

Lex could feel his palms start to sweat as the detective led him toward the door. He glanced back at the doctor. "Thank you."

He doubted he'd ever forget the man.

Dr. Green nodded then climbed up on the bed, straddling the nurse. Lex caught just a hint of a grin on the man's face before he placed his hands on the man's chest. "Time to have a heart attack, my friend."

The nurse chuckled and closed his eyes.

Lex figured that was there cue. He kept his head tilted down as the detective opened the door and led him out. He was pretty much not breathing as he immediately took a right then walked with the detective down the corridor.

They had almost reached the end of the hallway when he heard someone shout. His first instinct was to turn around and see what was going on.

The detective grabbed his arm. "Keep walking."

Lex kept walking.

A door opened behind them, and the shouting got even louder. Lex wasn't able to help himself. Just as the turned the corner, he glanced back. Carson was running alongside of the bed the doctor was kneeling on as it was pushed down the hallway in the opposite direction. He was shouting at the doctor, reaching for his arm.

"Run," the detective snapped.

Lex ran.

They went down the corridor until they reached an elevator. Rain slapped the button to call the elevator to their floor. When it reached them and the doors slid open, Rain led Lex inside then hit the button to take them down to the parking garage level.

"Where are we headed?"

"Best not to talk about it yet."

That did not reassure Lex in the least.

When they reached the parking garage, Rain walked past several vehicles until he came to a dark blue four-door sedan. Lex suddenly understood where people grew confused about what a car looked like. It could have been black, it could have been blue. There was nothing distinct about the vehicle.

Rain popped the trunk then gestured to it. "Get in."
