I cocked my head, curious by the grin on Hank's face. "What plan?"
Chapter Thirteen
I didn't like this plan.
I glanced at the others. They gave me a nod I knew was meant to be encouraging, but I doubted anything could make me feel better except for this whole mess all to be over and for Abe to be back in my arms.
Every member of the geek squad, including Andrew, the newest member, had been partnered up except me. Kaito was partnered up with McDermott, Ewan was with Judge, Andrew was with Cooper, and Ian was with Hank.
We were all just standing there.
I was scared, but that was nothing new for me. I was surprised at the amount of trepidation I could see in the faces of the others. Logically, I knew everyone got scared at one time or another. I guess I just never expected it from my friends. They often seemed bigger than life to me. Smart, handsome, talented. It was weird to think they were just as human as I was.
So to speak.
"We have your back, Danny," Hank said. "Just stick to the plan."
Right.
Let myself get captured so I could find Abe, then use that funky telepathy thing we had going on to let the others know where we were being held.
Sounded simple enough.
I was scared out of my freaking mind.
I pushed open the door and stepped into the corridor. The main thing I tried to remember was that I wasn't supposed to know I was walking into a trap. As far as we knew, Atkins might know I was a shifter, but he didn't know everything I could do or that most of my senses were enhanced even when I was in human form.
I glanced both directions down the corridor. They both looked gloomy and made me feel as if I was walking into a horror movie. A ceiling light flickered at one end before going dark. I swallowed tightly and headed in the other direction. I wasn't sure exactly where the morgue was located, but that was where I was supposed to go.
At least, I thought that was where I was supposed to go. As I neared the large double doors under the morgue sign, I realized the cologne I'd smelled before was stronger farther on down the hallway.
"I don't think they have Abe in the morgue,"I sent silently back to the others."I smell the guy from the elevator just a little farther down the hallway. His cologne is horrible."
"Horrible how?"Ian asked.
"Well, it smells cheap, and I'm pretty sure the guy used the entire bottle."
"Oh, one of those."
"I actually think that's on purpose."In fact, I knew it was."It gives me a scent to follow as I walk to my doom."
"You're not walking to your doom, Danny,"Ewan said."We won't let that happen."
I'd believe that when I was back safely in my home with Abe wrapped around me.
"Just stay in touch."
"We have you on the screen, Danny,"Ian said."Hank says he can see exactly where you are."
Yeah, those darn trackers I'd invented worked on people as well as they did on cars. They itched like crazy, but they worked. Although, I wasn't sure putting one on my ass cheek was such a hot idea. Ian seemed to think they would never search me there. I wasn't so sure.
I definitely needed to think about inventing one that a person could wear that no one could see. There could be a huge market in the security world, not to mention law enforcement. Maybe I'd talk to some of my government contacts once this was all over.
I pushed open one of the swinging doors leading into the morgue just to be sure. The place was vacant except for a couple of metal gurneys lined up against the wall. Luckily, there were no bodies on them.
I admit I was surprised that the morgue was empty. I thought for sure there would be a coroner or an orderly at the very least, but maybe that was all part of the plan. Atkins planned to take me, but I doubted he wanted anyone to see him take me.
I moved away from the swinging door, almost jumping out of my skin when it swung out and nailed me in the ass. I took a deep breath then continued on my way down the corridor. The walls were white and I knew they did that because it was easier to clean, but it made the entire place look a little more stark…and eerie.
