I walked over to my computer bay and turned on my computer. After it booted up, I engaged the security measures that would enable me to see if anyone was inside my house or hanging around outside. It was the same program I'd sent to Ian ages ago.
I picked up my phone, hit the scrambler, then dialed Ian.
I needed help.
Chapter Two
"I need the geek squad," I said as soon as Ian answered. "I need them now."
"Are you safe?" Ian asked.
"I don't think so."
"Okay, where are you now?"
"I'm in the bunker, but…" My throat thickened as I tried to draw in my next breath. I knew I was close to a panic attack. I could feel the pressure building in my chest. "They killed him, Ian. They just shot him."
"Who?"
"Michael."
"Michael?" Ian asked. "Isn't he one of the guys who works in the university lab with you?"
"He doesn't work with me, but yeah, he works in the lab. He's a student here."
"Okay, and someone shot Michael or Michael shot someone else?"
"Professor Bradley and some guy in a fancy suit shot him."
"Christ almighty! Okay, um…hold on."
I could hear him whispering, but even with my enhanced senses, I couldn't understand what he was saying. It was all muffled as if he had his phone pressed to his shirt.
"Danny?"
"Yeah."
"Do you remember CorporalAbiolaSesay? He's one of the members of Hank's team."
I racked my brain, trying to put a face with the name. "I remember Hank mentioning him, but I don't think we ever actually met. I think he'd been injured on that mission where Hank got kidnapped and he was in the hospital."
"Right, I forgot about that," Ian said. "Well, anyway, Abe is at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, just about five hours from you. Can you hang on that long?"
I chewed on my thumbnail for a moment. "Maybe?"
If I was really, really lucky, and I usually wasn't that lucky.
"Okay, I want you to stay in the bunker unless you need to escape. Hank is on the phone with Abe right now. Don't leave the bunker unless you absolutely have to. Understand? Hank and I are going to head your way just as soon as I get off the phone with you. I'll call the others, and we'll all meet at your place."
I felt a little better.
"Okay."
"Do you need me to stay on the phone with you?"
I really wanted him to, but I already sounded like a whiny baby. I didn't need to add to that. "No, I'll be okay."
I hoped.
