"And if he doesn't?" Hank asked.
It was the same question flowing through my mind, but I was too afraid to ask.
"Then he'll remain in the ICU while we run a few more tests."
Tears filled my eyes, overflowing and sliding down my cheeks. I did this. I brought Abe into my world and got him hurt. I don't think I could live with myself if he didn't make it. I tried to suck in a breath when every worst-case scenario started running through my head. The pressure in my chest increased, and I started having trouble drawing air into my lungs. Spots formed in front of my eyes.
My head snapped back when someone slapped me across the face. "Hey." I cradled my cheek and glared at Ian. "What'd you do that for?"
"You were having a panic attack."
"Oh." My cheeks flushed as I glanced around to see who all had seen my meltdown. Oh great. Just about everyone. Lucky me. The doctor was gone. I wasn't sure if that was a plus or not. "Sorry."
Ian's arms crossed, and he pinned me with a hard stare. "When did you and Abe become so chummy?"
I took a step back when Kaito, Ewan, and Andrew formed a line behind Ian. "We're seeing each other." I really hoped Abe didn't mind me saying that. We'd never quite gotten around to discussing the whole boyfriend thing.
"Since when?" Ewan asked. "The last time I knew, you two hadn't even formally met."
True, but things had changed. "Abe told me he's wanted me since the first time he saw me. He was just waiting for the right time."
Andrew took a step closer, moving to stand next to Ian. "Sounds to me like you're a little more than chummy."
I jutted out my chin, feeling a stubborn streak race through me. "He's moving in with me."
Ian's eyebrows lifted. "He's moving in with you?"
"Yes. He needs a safe place to land when he's home from a mission. I told him he could stay with me."
"In the guest room or in your room?" Kaito asked.
I swallowed hard. "In my room."
The four men stared at me for a moment before breaking out in grins. "Way to go, squirt," Ian said. "I knew you had it in you."
I had no idea what he was talking about.
"That's one more for the geek squad," Kaito said. He licked his finger then made three imaginary check marks in the air. "Geek squad, three. Mortal man, zip."
Huh?
Andrew patted my shoulder. "Good for you, Danny. Abe's a good man."
I already knew that. I didn't understand why Andrew felt the need to tell me. I glanced at Ewan. So far, he'd been the only one who hadn't said anything.
"Are you sure about this, Danny?" Ewan asked.
"I'm sure," I answered with no hesitation. "He makes me happy."
Ewan smiled. "That's all I was worried about."
"Can I go see Abe now?"
"The doctor said it would be about an hour before they had him settled in his room," Hank said. "Why don't we go get some coffee and you can explain to me how one of my best friends ended up in the ICU."
Uh oh.
I smiled weakly. "Yeah, I can do that."
