Stefan heard horses ride past him, but he couldn't lift his head to check who it was. He had another one of those metal fuckers in his sight. He blew out a calming breath then slowly and steadily pulled the trigger.
Now they were down to one spider and the scorpion. Stefan knew if he got it in his sights, he could take out the other spider, but he didn't have a chance in hell of eliminating the scorpion. He'd need a bazooka.
He used his scope to survey the area. His heart beat a little faster when he saw the scorpion in full pursuit of the riders on horseback. It nearly beat out of his chest when he spotted Sawyer running right for the mechanical monster.
"No, no, no," he whispered.
He quickly took out the spider when it started to fire at Sawyer then returned his attention to the scorpion. He aimed for the eyes, or what they had as eyes. They were basically sensors in the front of its metal body.
He started firing, hoping one of his shots would penetrate the scorpion's metallic hide. When one of the scorpion's red eyes exploded, Stefan almost whooped. He wanted to, but the scorpion was still coming, and now he was pissed.
Stefan kept firing until his rifle emptied. He quickly changed out the ammo clip then started firing again. The riders and the scorpion were getting closer, and he knew pretty soon he'd have to get up and move. He just wanted to get off a few more shots. Maybe if he took out the other eye, the scorpion would be easier to take out.
He kept firing until a blur moved across his line of sight. He was already pulling the trigger even as he realized that blur was Sawyer. He jerked his rifle hard to one side and prayed. He quickly angled his scope until he had Sawyer in sight. He didn't look injured, but good god, he was headed right for the scorpion.
"Jesus, baby, what are you doing?" Stefan started firing at the scorpion again, his shots almost wild in nature as he tried to take it out before it took Sawyer out. He had no idea what the man was thinking, but he had to be insane to run toward the scorpion. People didn't run toward them. They ran from them.
Stefan screamed and dropped his rifle when the scorpion exploded. He quickly picked it up again and looked down the sight, looking for Sawyer. His chest felt heavy as if he couldn't pull enough air into his lungs.
"Come on, Sawyer," he whispered desperately. "Where are you?"
Stefan didn't feel as if he could breathe again until he spotted Sawyer standing just up the hill from the wreckage. When Sawyer glanced over his shoulder, Stefan turned to see what he was looking at. His jaw dropped.
"Damn."
Standing just a few feet behind him was Roark with a bazooka.
Well, that explained who had destroyed the scorpion. The man's reputation was just growing. Now he'd single-handedly destroyed two scorpions. Stefan was just glad the man was on their side.
Roark grinned as he wiggled his eyebrows. "Sawyer's got some great toys."
Chapter Fourteen
Sawyer slowly climbed his way back up the hill to the complex. He was a little disappointed that he hadn't been the one to take the scorpion out, but not enough to make an issue of it. The damn thing was destroyed, and ultimately, that was all that mattered.
Stefan was waiting for him in the curve of the road, right before the parking lot. He had his rifle resting on his shoulder. Roark stood next to him with a bazooka resting on his shoulder. Roark's weapon was way bigger.
Sawyer's eyebrows rose nearly to his hairline. "Where'd you get that?"
"In the armory."
"We have an armory?"
Who knew?
"Yes," Roark replied, "it's on the same level as the storage room, but at the other end of the corridor. I saw the sign for it when you were showing us around."
"I've been here for six months," Sawyer said. "I've never seen a sign for the armory."
"It's labeled Ordnance."
Sawyer frowned as he imagined the area in his head. "Oh yeah, it's back behind the stairs." Huh. He hadn't had the chance to check out that section of the corridor yet, mostly because he hadn't connected the word Ordnance with an armory.
Yeah, he was an idiot like that.
He really should have spent more time exploring the space, but after finding the bunker and the storage room, he'd kind of gotten wrapped up in getting the place livable.
Roark nodded his head back toward the mountain complex. "Come on, the others are waiting for us, and we should probably get inside in case there are any other mechs in the area."
