Will quickly rolled to the side of the bed and hopped up before running to the bathroom. Hector chuckled as he followed after the man. He was actually surprised at how much he had been smiling lately. He wasn’t used to it. He wasn’t against it. He just wasn’t used to it.
After showering and grabbing something quick to tide them over until they could make a real meal, they headed outside. Hector handed Will his spare helmet. “Have you ever ridden on a bike before?”
Will shook his head.
“Okay, all you need to do is hold on to me and lean when I lean. I won’t let us crash, okay?”
Will gulped, but nodded.
Hector helped him on with his helmet before strapping on his own. He climbed onto the bike then waited for Will to climb on behind him. Will’s arm encircled him in a death grip. Hector turned his head so Will could hear him.
“You don’t have to hold on quite so hard.”
“Oh, sorry.” Will’s arms loosened until Hector started up the bike, and then they tightened right back up.
Hector chuckled and gripped the throttle and got them underway. He knew Will would get used to riding the bike if he was going to stick around. If you had never ridden one, it could be kind of scary.
The ride to town went simple enough considering Hector wasn’t used to having someone on the back of his bike, but he couldn’t say he didn’t like it because he did. Especially knowing it was Will. He drove extra careful.
It wasn’t until they reached the town limits that Hector realized there was a Lincoln Town Car following them, the same black Lincoln Town Car that the two federal agents had been in. Hector kept a close eye on his rearview mirror as he took a series of turns. The Lincoln Town Car followed right behind them. It didn’t even seem as if they were trying to hide the fact that they were following Hector and Will.
As he drove through town, Hector spotted Terry Iverson and Jonny Bozeman standing next to their ambulance in the fire station rig bay. He turned his bike and drove it right into the bay before bringing it to a quick stop and turning it off. The motor hadn’t even quieted before he was jumping off his bike, grabbing Will up in his arms, and racing farther into the fire station.
“Terry, call Dan!”
They needed help.
Chapter Ten
Will didn’t understand what was going on, but something had freaked Hector out and that freaked him out. When he was rushed into an office where a tall curly-haired man sat behind a large desk, Will clung to Hector, even when the man tried to set him on his feet. He wasn’t going to let go unless he was forced to.
“Hector,” the man behind the desk said.
“Chief, I need you to call the sheriff,” Hector said. “We’re being followed.”
Will shuddered with fear. “Followed?”
“Yeah, baby. I think it was those feds that were asking about you.”
Cold, black terror swept through Will, turning his insides into one huge knot of panic. He started to struggle to get out of Hector’s arms. He had to get away, to escape. They were going to get him. He’d never see daylight again.
“Will, stop!” Hector’s arms tightened.
Will whimpered as tears filled his eyes. When he continued to struggle, Hector grabbed his arms and gave him a little shake.
“Will!”
Will stared up at Hector in shock before collapsing against his chest.
“Baby, stop. It’s okay. I won’t let them take you.”
“You can’t stop it,” Will whispered as the tears in his eyes slowly began to trail down his cheeks. “You said it yourself. They’re federal agents.”
“We’re actually not too sure of that,” Hector said.
Will stilled. “What?”
“The sheriff is looking into it, but so far, he hasn’t been able to find anything connecting you to any federal case, which means they have no business taking you anywhere.”
