Terry's eyebrows lifted. "Today?"

Marc nodded. "I'm hoping for some fingerprints."

"Um…" Terry glanced around. "I might have touched a couple of the boxes of my stuff, but other than that, I don't think so."

"Okay, I'm going to have the sheriff bring in someone to fingerprint the room. I don't want you to touch anything else."

Terry nodded.

"I'll need to see that rental agreement, Dan, and then get a statement from both of you."

"You might want to get one from Hector, too," Terry said. "I don't know what he saw, but he was awake when I confronted Keith."

Dan hadn't really had the chance to meet Hector yet. He knew the man lived here because Keith had told him Hector was one of the roommates living in the house, but he'd only seen him that once in the hallway. The man worked nights as a bouncer in a bar. He slept during the day.

"Okay, let's head out of here so we don't contaminate any of the evidence." Marc pulled out his cell phone. "I'll call the sheriff and update him and see if he can put an APB out on Keith and his buddies. We might not be able to arrest them until the scene is processed, but we can certainly bring them in for questioning."

"Deputy," Dan said, "Keith and his buddies told me they were going for boxes after Terry evicted him. They hightailed it out of here and haven't been back."

Marc glanced at Terry. "You evicted him?"

"He rented out my bedroom to Dan," Terry said. "Of course I evicted him."

Marc snorted. "About damn time."

Dan smiled when Terry's eyes rolled again. The guy had spunk. Dan liked that. "I'll go get that rental agreement."

As he headed up the stairs to the room he'd rented, Dan couldn't help but wonder just how much longer it would behisroom. He knew Terry said he could stay, but it just didn't feel right. This had been Terry's room his entire life. Taking it from him would be wrong. Maybe it was time to go back to Chester's place.

At least he was already packed.

Dan grabbed the rental agreement Terry had handed him back earlier and walked back out of the bedroom. He was going to miss that room. He might not have unpacked yet, but he liked the vibe of the place. He could have been happy here.

Dan handed the rental agreement over to the deputy when he reached the main floor. "I can get a copy of the canceled check from the bank if you think you'll need it. It was made out to Keith."

"Might not hurt," Marc said. "One more nail in his coffin."

"For a guy who didn't have a record, he seems to be racking up quite a few nails." There was something off about that to Dan. He just couldn't quite figure out what it was.

"Did you write that the money was for rent on the check?" Terry asked.

Dan frowned as he tried to remember. "I don't think so."

Did it matter?

"Then it could simply be a loan from one friend to another."

"We're not friends."

"Says you, but I'll bet more than one person saw you talking at the diner, and how many people did you tell that you were moving in here where Keith lives?"

Dan hated that Terry was making sense. "It's all circumstantial."

"Exactly," Terry replied. "Like I said, he skated the edge of the law, but he never steps over it."

"Then how is he going to explain stealing your mother's jewelry?"

"Did you see him take it?" Marc asked.
