Dan frowned as he looked at the map then down the street. He couldn't see the same spot, but it helped him figure out where it was. "That's Chester's building, isn't it?"

The sheriff nodded.

"Has anyone called him?"

"Jack called him and told him to lock himself in his apartment. He's out of harm's way."

"What about any other tenants in the building?"

"There's only two at the moment. Will was in one of the apartments, and we haven't been able to reach the other resident. Chester rented your old place to him last month."

Dan lifted an eyebrow. "Last month?"

The sheriff nodded again. "That's what Jack told me."

"And that doesn't sound fishy to you?" It sure did to Dan.

Sheriff Riley chuckled. "Oh, it does, and it's very ripe. I have Dorian back at the station calling some of his contacts to see what he can find on this guy. I want to know if he has some connection to Cade Creek."

"What's his name?"

"Tyson Brown."

The name didn't sound familiar, but if this guy really was the shooter, Dan doubted that was his real name.

"How are we going to do this?" he asked.

"Dan, I want you and Mike to go around and come up the back fire escape. Nick, Marc, and Happy have all offered to go in the front door. Jack is going to meet them there."

When everyone started to yell at once, the sheriff held up his hand. "They are taking groceries over for one of Chester's cooking classes. If this guy has been here long enough, he's seen people coming and going all the time. They will wait there for my call. The rest of us are going to get in position in the buildings surrounding Chester and Jack's place."

Okay, that was actually a good plan.

"Okay, I want everyone to keep their heads about them," the sheriff said. "We don't need any more loss of life. There's already been enough."

"Does anyone know if Will is alive?" Dan asked.

John shook his head. "DB is waiting to move in just as soon as we give him the all clear. Jamie and Jonny are supposed to come back with the ambulance as soon as they drop Terry and Hector off. They'll wait here with DB."

For such a small town, Dan appreciated how efficient they were. Sheriff Riley always seemed to have a plan, and damn near everyone in town jumped in if there was a crisis. Hell, even the minister was here. Of course, with his muscles and tattoos he looked like a biker dude, but he was still here.

God, Dan loved this place.

Dan pulled out his weapon and made sure it was ready to go before replacing it and looking toward Mike. "You ready?"

"As I ever will be, I suppose." DEA Supervisory Agent Mike Ryan grimaced. "We'd better do this quick, though. Adam is expecting me home soon to feed Cato. The little shit has escaped from his stall twice now, trying to get to the vegetable garden Adam planted."

Mike didn't sound so mad about having to go home and feed his colt as he put on. He griped a lot, but Dan secretly thought Mike adored the little guy.

"Okay, let's do this."

Dan followed after Mike as they made their way around several buildings. They actually only had to run a few blocks. Cade Creek wasn'tthatbig. By the time the alleyway leading to Chester's building came into view, Dan was panting hard.

They stopped just before they went down the alley. Dan kept an eye out while Mike called the sheriff and made sure they were cleared to proceed. Once they had been given the okay, Dan hurried over to the fire escape.

He remembered Jack telling him a story of proposing to his husband on this fire escape and the entire fire station team serenading them from below. Jack got misty-eyed every time he talked about it.

Dan knew he and Terry weren't to that point yet, but when they were, he'd have to come up with something good so Terry would have that special memory.
