Chapter Eight

Terry glanced at the early morning light starting to shine through his window then groaned as he groped for his cell phone. Didn't people understand sleeping? He had to blink several times before he could see the screen. It was way too damn early.

Crap.

Terry swiped his thumb across the screen then placed the phone to his ear. He drew in a steady breath before saying, "Chief."

"I need you to come in today, Terry," Chief Jack Helmond said.

Terry's heart sank as he glanced at the naked man sleeping beside him. He so didn't want to go to work today.

"I need to talk to you about something," the chief continued.

"What?"

"I don't want to discuss it over the phone. Just come into my office."

"Yes, sir. I can be there in thirty minutes."

He needed coffee first.

"I'll see you then."

Chief Helmond hung up before Terry could say anything more. Terry groaned as he put his cell phone back on the nightstand. He so didn't want to go into work, but he knew ignoring the chief could be detrimental to his continued ability to work.

The man was his boss after all.

"Who was that?" Dan mumbled.

"My boss. He wants to see me in his office in a half hour."

Dan cracked one eye open and glanced toward the window. "Now?"

"Yep."

"Ugh." Dan closed his eye and buried his face in his pillow.

Terry chuckled before leaning over to press a kiss to Dan's cheek. "Go back to sleep, babe. I shouldn't be long."

"Did he say what he wanted?"

"No," Terry admitted. He had actually seemed kind of secretive. It had been weird. "Maybe he wants to change my work schedule or something."

"And he couldn't wait until you got to work to do that?"

Terry shrugged. "We did get a lot of calls last night. Maybe I didn't fill out the paperwork properly." Terry doubted it, but anything was possible. "Just go back to sleep. I'll wake you when I get home."

Terry watched Dan for a moment, smiling when the man started to snore. He wasn't a fan of snoring exactly, but the big, buff DEA agent snored like a kitten. It was very cute.

He rolled to the side of the bed and got up then stumbled toward the bathroom. He'd better get moving or he'd never leave Dan's side. His bed was way too comfortable, and knowing Dan was in it made it even better.

Terry's gut clenched when he stepped into the station twenty minutes later. It was early enough that most of the firefighters were sleeping, waiting for an emergency response call, but the light was shining very brightly in the chief's office.

He almost turned and walked back out of the station. And he might have, if Chief Helmond hadn't looked up at him, grimaced, and waved him in. Something was wrong. Terry could see it in the deep frown on the chief's face.

Terry swallowed tightly as he stepped inside the office. "You wanted to see me, Chief?"

"Close the door, Terry."
