“I’m at the gallery and I’m in trouble. Bring the cavalry.” I smirked as I handed the phone over. “I tried to warn you. Now, you’re fucked!”
Chapter Seven
Salvador
I roared when Lany’s line went dead. I frantically dialed his phone again, growling in frustration when it went to voice mail.
I didn’t know how Lany got himself into these messes, but he did, over and over again. I cringed as I thought about what it could be this time.
“Clarke!” I shouted as I headed for the door.
“Yeah?”
“Get geared up. We’re headed over to that art gallery where Eddie’s having his show on Saturday. Lany’s in trouble.”
“Again?”Sgt. Victor Clarke asked. He was my second-in-command on the SWAT team, but he was also my friend. “It hasn’t even been two weeks since the last incident.”
I snorted. “You’re telling me.”
I still had nightmares of the last time Lany had gotten into trouble.
“How does he do it?”
I just shook my head.
I had no idea.
“You need backup?” Burke asked.
The FBISupervisory Special Agent had been a thorn in my side when I’d met him, but I had slowly come to respect him after working with him while on assignment with the bureau. Now, we were friends more than colleagues.
He was here checking in on another case we had been working. Now, I was glad he was.
“You packing?”
Burke just stared at me until I chuckled. I nodded my head toward one of the lockers. “There’s some gear in there.”
Clarke pulled his vest down over his head and fixed the Velcro straps before pausing to look at me. “Isn’t Lyn hanging out with Lany and Eddie today, helping hang pictures?”
I nodded.
I was confused when Clarke’s face went ashen. “Clarke?”
The man just shook his head as he pulled out his phone and tapped away at the screen. “Okay, Eddie and Lyn are in the back of the gallery,” Clarke said without looking away from the screen. “They are hiding in one of the back rooms with a few of the gallery staff.”
He tapped away again.
I held my breath as I waited to hear what the next text would reveal.
“Lyn says there are five guys in the main room. He believes they are armed.”
“Where’s Lany?” I asked, afraid I already knew the answer.
Clarke raised his eyes to me. “In the main room.”
Of course he was.
I quickly finished gearing up, making sure I had extra ammo. I had a feeling I was going to need it. As we headed out the door, I debated calling Lany’s father. The man had agreed to help me locate someone who could watch over Lany while Eddie was staying with us, but he’d flip if he knew Lany was in trouble again.
