CHAPTER NINETEEN
JAKE
––––––––
“How’d it go?”Liamasks when I return from lunch and climb into the driver’s seat of the BHS SUV.
Great, except I had to lie to her all lunch about this fucking party she is throwing.
I did not tell my parents.
I will not be inviting them.
And who knows how she’s going to react when they don’t turn up.I’m still working on the reason they’ll be a no-show.
“Gut instinct?”I ask, recalling the odd comment Brad Thornton made.
I can’t live without my Caylee.
He was provoking me under the guise of a compliment tomyfucking girlfriend.
Mine for now, at least.
“It’s where we start.”Liam shrugged.
“He’s a sociopath with narcissistic tendencies.”I start the vehicle and glance in the rear mirror before pulling out into traffic.
“In other words, he fits the profile.”
Yeah.
That.
“Him and probably fifty other CEOs within a two-mile radius,” I admit, glancing around the buildings.“Could be anyone, and our line of thinking is way off.”
“True.”Liam fiddles with the stereo, landing on some rap while I recall Brad’s body language over and over.
Using Caylee to meet him was a bit low but if he’s our predator, then we need to do everything we can to get him behind bars.To protect her and any other underage girls.
Seeingmygirl was a bonus.Caylee looked beautiful, and I can’t wait to take her out again tonight.I bought us movie tickets and even chose asort ofchick flick.
I would say I’m doing well at this boyfriend gig; except for the fact I’m hiding things from her and being dishonest.
Essentially.
When she started chatting about the party over lunch, I nodded and hummed at all the right places. But as we walked back to the clinic, I said, “I thought you could meet them privately the first time.”
It sort of fell out, but as it did, I thought it might be an easy out.
To delay the inevitable.
I was wrong.
