“Activating them now,” Ares said. “And I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
Xander clicked off.
“We make a good team, Xander.” Logan coughed and wheezed.
“You know what you’re doing, Logan.”
“Come home with us. She misses you.”
“We can talk about it later.”
“She does that too. Change the subject, it’s annoying. Is Edwin dead?”
Xander glanced over his shoulder. He didn’t want to leave Logan to check on Edwin, who was on the other side of the room. “I don’t know, but yes, I think he is.”
“What am I going to tell Hana?”
“Logan, press harder.” Xander took over, holding down the suit jacket with as much force as he could. “We’ll take care of it. You’re going to tell her that there was a break-in at his house, okay? That’s the story.”
“This sucks.”
“Yeah. It’s not how I wanted to spend my night either.”
He watched his friend’s eyes roll to the back of his head.
“Logan!”
He heard footsteps from the hall and released a pent-up breath.
Six guys, dressed in black from head to toe. The one wearing a headset, signalled to Xander, checked Edwin and shook his head. Then three of the guys took Ed away.
Dr. Redden rushed over to Logan, checking his pupils. “He needs blood, IV saline, and the hospital,” she said.
“Dammit,” Xander said.
Logan opened his eyes again, his breathing laboured. “Sorry for the trouble.” His mouth twisted into what might have been a grin before he closed his eyes.
“Logan, listen.”
Logan’s eyes fluttered open. Xander could tell he couldn’t focus, but he had to make the next step clear to his friend.
“Dr. Redden is going to take you to the hospital. You don’t remember anything. You tried to help someone, gave them money and that person had a knife. They ran away, you don’t remember much. Got it?”
“Yeah...” Logan said, his voice fading away. Xander could only hope he’d understood the instructions.
“I’ll drop you right at the emergency,” Dr. Redden said.
“Thanks, Doctor,” Xander said.
“Don’t mention it.” Dr. Redden signalled to two more team members, and they helped lift Logan, carrying him out of the room.
“Well, this is a mess,” Ares said from the doorway.
“Good thing I have you to clean it up,” Xander said.
“Yep. You know what to do,” Ares said to the guy in the headset. “Full clean-up. Check for security videos here and across the street, make sure there isn’t even a fingerprint. Random robbery at Edwin’s house.”
“It’ll be done,” the guy with the headset said.
