She glanced back down the track and then gave him an apologetic smile. “Rain check?”

“You got it. You know where to find me.”

“I do.”

He opened her car door for her and she slid behind the wheel, shooting him a grateful smile that made him want to bend down and capture her lips with his.

Yes, do it,his bear urged, and he ignored both the bear and his own desires. Normal people did not just go round kissing when they barely knew the first thing about each other.

We know she is our mate, his bear told him.And there is nothing about her that is merely ‘normal’.

In that, he had to agree. But still, he swallowed his urge to claim her lips, and contented himself with inhaling her delicious scent one last time. Pine and fresh snow and cinnamon…and something else. He frowned, and then his eyes widened as he recognized the scent.

His hand shot out and he caught the door just as she started to close it. She looked up at him, confusion coloring her face.

“Grant?”

“Get out of the car.”

“I…what?”

“This whole area reeks of brake fluid. You can’t drive this.”

“Are you sure?” She leaned out of the car, sniffing. “I can’t smell anything.”

“I’m sure. Please, get out.”

She did, and it wasn’t until she was safely out of the vehicle that he crouched down and peered under it. What he saw sent white hot fury surging through him, and he felt his features harden. His bear roared inside his head, almost deafening him.

Someone had done this. Deliberately.

He straightened, and Alice’s eyes widened as she took in his expression. He took a breath and forced himself to calm down. He could deal with whoever had done this later. Right now, Alice looked terrified. Of him.

“Sorry,” he said. “I don’t mean to scare you. But it looks like someone’s cut your brake lines.”

“Cut my…” She cut off abruptly, looking pale.

“Why don’t you come inside? I’ll give our mechanic a call. I don’t think he’s working today, but it should be a pretty quick job.”

“If you’re sure…”

She wrapped her arms around herself and looked around.

“I’m sure,” he said. “Come on, let’s get you inside, out of the cold.”

Yes, get mate to safely, and then track whoever would hurt her.

Right now, it was only his mate’s presence that was holding him back from hunting down whoever had sabotaged her car and making them pay for even thinking about harming her.

But that wasn’t what she needed from him right now.

He led her inside his cabin, shutting the cold outside.

“Have a seat,” he said, gesturing to the snug leather couch, and his bear preened at the thought of their mate inside their den. “I’ll get the fire started.”

“Oh, you don’t have to,” she protested. “You must have been busy before I interrupted you…”

“Never too busy to help a damsel in distress,” he said, shooting a grin at her over his shoulder as he crouched in front of the fireplace.
