Wyatt had just gotten to his feet when the doorbell sounded. He met Amelia’s gaze and frowned.
“I wonder who that could be.”
She shrugged. “Do you often have visitors at night?”
She hated how jealous she sounded, but there wasn’t anything she could do to take the question back. Fortunately, Wyatt didn’t seem to mind her asking because he answered immediately.
“No, never. Stay here. I’ll go and see who it is.”
Like hell.
If it was a woman then Amelia wanted to see what her competition looked like and if it was someone more nefarious then she wasn’t about to let Wyatt face them alone. She got to her feet and followed him out to the front door. He opened it then peered out into the night, and frowned.
“Hawk, Ice?”
Amelia blinked. What sort of names were those?
“Hey Flint,” one of the men greeted him. “We came to check on you. Is everything okay?”
Flint?
Wyatt frowned. “Of course. Why wouldn’t it be?”
“Dude, you’ve taken zero personal days in the last five years. We were worried about you.”
“Is he all right?” a woman shouted from out in the street.
Amelia’s stomach lurched at the sound of the female voice, and she prayed Wyatt wasn’t romantically linked with her. Amelia was capable of being reasonable, mostly, but her dragon was another matter. The beast had roused at the sound of the voice. If it was free, Amelia had no doubt it would be snorting out smoke and swishing its huge tail back and forth angrily, searching out the woman who might have staked a claim tohermate. And that would have been bad. For some reason that Amelia was struggling to remember right now.
She heard footsteps walking up the path to the house and then there were more voices.
“Flint, is everything okay?”
Wyatt’s frown deepened into a scowl. “What are you all doing here?”
“We were worried about you,” the woman said.
“Yeah,” one of the men added. “We came to check on you. What’s wrong? Aren’t you going to invite us in?”
Wyatt scrubbed a hand over the back of his neck. “I, uh…”
“Flint, why are you being so cagey?” someone else asked. “What’s going on?”
Amelia stepped out from behind Wyatt and there were five shocked gasps.
“Hey,” she said, and gave them all a little wave.
“Holy crap,” one of the men said. “You didn’t tell us you knew any supermodels.”
Amelia let out a very unladylike snort. “Hardly,” she said. “But thanks.”
Wyatt heaved a sigh. “Amelia, I’d like to introduce you to the members of my SWAT team. Gray, Ted, Ice, Hawk, and Kit. Guys, this is Amelia. My...”
She waited with bated breath for how he would describe her and had resigned herself to him saying friend when he added, “Mate.”
A strange, warm glow spread through her and she thought she might treasure that one single word more than the entire contents of her meagre hoard.
Everyone started talking at once.
