We cannot leave our mate unguarded.
His mate was anything but incapable of defending herself. Still, he’d stay close. Make sure no-one was trying to sneak up on them. He narrowed his eyes as a thought occurred to him. “Is there any chance that Silas is the person who’s been following you?”
“I thought about that, of course,” Amelia said. “But I don’t think it’s likely. When I left, I told no one where I was going and it’s a big world, you know? He would have no idea that I’m here in Miami.”
Wyatt nodded. “Fair enough. I’m going to take a walk. I just want to check that man isn’t hanging around outside again.”
Amelia frowned. “Be careful.”
Wyatt let out a throaty chuckle. “I’ve got a little bit of experience of handling myself against human men, and even other shifters. Most men don’t want to mess with me on account of my size.”
Amelia smiled wryly. “I can’t say that I blame them.”
“We’ll go by your condo later and pick up some of your things, okay?”
She nodded and he headed for the door.
“Wyatt?” she said, and he turned around once more to face her.
“Yeah?”
“Thank you. For helping me.”
It was on the tip of Wyatt’s tongue to say, ‘that’s what mates are for’, but he stopped himself before the words left his mouth and instead, he gave her a curt nod. It would be cruel to give her false hope, and that was all it could ever be. He walked out of his house without another word. Outside, he walked up and down his street three times, scanning every property and every car, but the man was nowhere to be seen, making Wyatt wonder if there really had been anything sinister going on with the man he’d seen earlier that morning. Maybe it had just been a nosey passerby who’d gotten spooked when someone Wyatt’s size and build had started heading his way.
And maybe it hadn’t been.
As he walked, his mind was a jumble of thoughts and he struggled to make sense of any of them. And that was just the effect of being around Amelia for an hour. Being around her for the next few days without claiming her was going to be torture of the highest order. Especially considering his reason for not claiming her no longer seemed to be valid.
Because it’s not.
Thanks, dragon,he thought wryly. That was absolutely not helping.
And when he made his way back to the house, he was no surer of what he should do than when he had left.
