She glared at him. “Let me go.”
He squeezed her wrist tighter before finally releasing her, then glaring at her as she walked away from him. She hurried back into the daylight of the street, heart hammering in her chest. Ray couldn’t believe what had just happened. She hadn’t expected him to be jumping for joy with the news that she was breaking up with him, but she never would have thought he could be so cold. So…nasty. She hadn’t seen that side of him before, not even a glimpse. It seemed like she’d had a lucky escape meeting Sloane when she did.
As soon as she walked back into her condo, Sloane practically threw himself at her. He pulled her into his arms and kissed her long and hard. When he finally pulled back, she was breathless.
“What was that for?” she asked, grinning at him.
“Sorry, I didn’t hurt you, did I?”
“No, not at all.”
He sighed, then scrubbed a hand over his face. “Good. Sorry about that, I just had to get my scent on you. It’s a shifter thing. How did it go?”
When she winced, Sloane’s eyes darkened. “What happened?”
She gave him a rundown of how Jack had acted, and Sloane bit out a curse.
“That asshole,” he muttered. “I should go and see if he’s still there and kick his ass.”
“Please don’t,” Ray begged.
“What’s his full name?”
She narrowed her eyes. “Why? You’re not going to find out where he lives and go to his house to kick his ass, are you?”
Sloane sighed. “No, babe. I wouldn’t do that. Even if I wanted to. But I just want to do some checking on him to make sure it was only an idle threat.”
“Oh, I’m sure it was nothing to worry about,” Ray said with a wave of her hand.
Sloane just stared at her, eyebrows raised.
“It’s not the first time people thought dating me was their lottery ticket to instant wealth, you know.”
Sloane kept staring.
“He wouldn’t be dumb enough to try anything.”
She frowned, wondering if she was trying to convince Sloane, or herself. With a sigh, she relented.
“It’s Jack Mallory.”
“Thanks, babe.”
Sloane leaned in and gave her a peck on the lips. “I’m sure it’s nothing but sour grapes, but where my mate is concerned, I’d rather be safe than sorry.”
Ray couldn’t argue with that logic and after dealing with Jack, it was actually a relief to know she had someone looking out for her.
