Sloane
“Hawk, you get anything from your informants last night?” Flint asked as he curled a weight with one hand.
Hawk shook his head. “There are lots of murmurings that something is going down in the next couple of days, but no one knows anything concrete.”
“Keep trying,” Flint said. “One of them is sure to hear something soon.”
They’d been discussing their latest drug bust operation while they worked out in the FBI’s gym for the last hour, but Sloane had been too distracted to engage fully in the conversation. When his cell phone started ringing, he snatched it up off the floor next to his water bottle and swiped his finger across the screen to answer the call. It hadn’t even been a full day since he had met his mate, but waiting for her to call had been torture. He checked the display and didn’t recognize the number. He put the phone to his ear.
“Hello,” he answered, hastily, hoping it wouldn’t be a damn sales call again.
“By all means, answer your cell,” Flint said with a roll of his eyes.
Sloane looked across at his team leader then mouthed the word ‘sorry’ just as Ray said in his ear, “Hello, Sloane?”
Sloane closed his eyes and whispered up a silent prayer of thanks to whomever might be listening. He hadn’t expected her to call so soon, but he was so relieved she had.
“Yeah, beautiful, it’s me,” he replied warmly. “I’m so glad you called.”
“Um, I was wondering if you wanted to meet me later for a drink?” she asked, sounding unsure.
“Of course,” he said quickly. “I’d love to.”
“Okay, great. Well, I’ll text you the details of the bar, okay? See you later.”
“Yeah, babe, see you later,” Sloane said before ending the call.
He threw his arms straight up in the air and shouted, “Yes!”
“That was quick,” Ted remarked, hauling himself up a pull-up bar.
“Yeah, if he’d kidnapped me, I would have made him wait at least a week,” Kit said, jabbing a button on her treadmill. “Maybe longer.”
“Like any man would be crazy enough to kidnapyou,” Hawk grinned.
“Yeah, you’d kick his ass into tomorrow,” Gray said. “And then do it again for good measure.”
Kit rolled her eyes. “I’m notthatbad.”
“Oh, please,” Sloane said. “You’re worse.”
“Yeah, imagine finding out your mate has got bigger balls than you have,” Ted grunted.
Everyone chuckled.
“He’ll have to be one confident shifter to be mated to Kit,” Gray said.
“Who says her mate will be a shifter?” Flint asked. “She might find herself mated to a human man.”
The horrified look on Kit’s face made everyone laugh harder.
“Hey, did you talk to your mom last night about howyoucould be mated to a human?” Gray asked.
Sloane nodded. After he’d dropped Ray home the day before, he’d met with his team and they’d grilled him about everything that had happened from the moment he’d met his mate. During that time, he had fielded calls from both of his brothers, his sister, and his mom. They were all happy for him, but his mom was pissed he’d kidnapped Ray and his brother was pissed that he’d left him outside the bar.
Brody had said that when Jack had turned accusing eyes on him after Sloane had driven away with Ray, he’d had to make a run for it then hide when Jack had attempted to follow him. Sloane had no idea what his mate had told the police when she’d informed them that she was home safe and sound, but since no one had come knocking on his door the night before, he figured she hadn’t given them his name.
“My mom said she’d never heard of it happening before, then she called her mom and dad. They said the same thing. They’re going to try to get in touch with the elders from my dad’s region of Alaska to see if anyone there has heard of it happening before, but it sounds like it’s just one of those weird occurrences.”
