Hawk chuckled, but he was the only one.

Nash frowned. “Seriously though, are you well enough to be back at work?”

She shrugged. “Probably another day or so until I can go back out in the field, but I didn’t think a team meeting would be too taxing. That is unless you give me too much shit and I have to knock your ass out.”

Nash grinned. “I’d like to see you try. How’s the leg?”

“Hurts like a bitch.”

“I bet. Look, I just want to say that I’m sorry for—”

Kit held up her hand to cut him off. “Save it. I don’t want to hear your apologies because you didn’t do anything wrong and if anyone here says otherwise, they’ll have me to deal with. It’s not your job to babysit me, I can take care of myself.”

Nash opened his mouth to reply when Flint strode into the room. Probably just as well, because what he’d been about to say—meant in the best possible protective teammate way—would likely have earned him a slap round the back of the head. His good intentions seemed to end that way a lot, though he was damned if he knew why. Women. There was no understanding them. Not even his mate—how on earth had she been worried that he wouldarresther, of all things? He scrambled to put the distracting thought from his mind as Flint made his way through the room. The team leader’s eyes widened when he saw Kit was present, but he didn’t comment on it. Probably why he got less slaps. Well, that and his rank, obviously.

“Listen up, everyone. We haven’t got this room booked for very long, so we need to keep this meeting brief.”

He took a seat at the foot of the table and tossed a manila folder onto its surface. He opened it and glanced at his notes.

“This is where we’re at. You all know that Juan Martinez, the head honcho we were hoping to catch, wasn’t present at the house yesterday. Hawk has questioned the men we did arrest, but he didn’t get anywhere. They wouldn’t give up Juan’s location or give any information about how they are bringing the drugs into Miami.”

Hawk ducked his head apologetically, but Flint carried on.

“We’re checking to see if any of the men have warrants out for their arrest or are wanted back in Mexico. If nothing turns up, we haven’t got much to charge them on except resisting arrest, and, in the case of one of them, assaulting a federal officer.” Flint glanced at Kit as he made the last remark.

“We didn’t find any drugs at the house, despite what our informant told us. Does anyone have anything they want to add?”

When no one spoke up, Flint nodded. “All we can do right now is keep our ears to the ground and see what turns up. I want you all to shake down your informants and see if we can come up with another location. Okay?”

Everyone nodded their agreement.

“All right, good. That’s it, then.”

“If you’ve finished with the meeting, I’ve got something I’d like to mention,” Cole said.

Everyone turned in his direction, waiting expectantly to hear him impart some information about the case.

“I’m going to be a father!” he blurted.

Whoops and hollers and a symphony of congratulations rose from the group.

Nash’s jaw just about hit the floor. “Holy shit! I wondered why you had that dazed expression on your face. Figured you were just dreaming about being a bear shifter again.”

“She just told me last night,” Cole said. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet.”

“You’ll make a great father,” Flint said, but he had a distant look in his eyes that made Nash wonder what was up. Cole didn’t seem to notice, he was too caught up in his obvious delight. It got Nash thinking about little tiny Aria bear shifters running around…

“Thanks,” Cole said. “Maya has been feeling nauseous for days, but it didn’t occur to me that she could be pregnant. How did this happen?”

“Do we need to have a talk about the birds and bees?” Nash quipped.

Cole rolled his eyes. “I mean, I knowhowit happened. But so soon after we got together? I didn’t think I’d be making this announcement for another ten or twenty years.”

“It is fast by a shifter’s standards,” Kit said. “But it’s not unheard of. My cousin Vince’s mate got pregnant within the first week they got together.”

Hawk winced. “That’s it, I’m never having sex again.”

Kit laughed. “I’ll remind you of that when you meet your mate.”
