I can’t comprehend why he failed in his attempts to take her, but the respite from imminent danger to Everly brings at least a momentary calm.

The bond with Everly is already growing stronger, connecting us on a profound level, and the mere thought of her in danger has sent me spiraling into a maelstrom of fear and protectiveness.

I lean against the tree, my chest heaving, and close my eyes, taking several deep breaths in an attempt to quell the storm within. The scent of damp earth and distant rain calms my senses as I focus on the rhythm of my breathing.

With each inhale and exhale, I gather the fragments of my composure. With my determination solidified, a steely resolve settles over me. The traitor in our midst will face justice, and Everly will be protected at all costs.

I push off the tree, my steps purposeful, ready to confront all that threatens to engulf us. I can sense the intensity of my men's stares as I walk back and forth in the small clearing.

We are camped just outside of Escalle. The town lies in ruins as survivors recount the terrifying events. According to their descriptions, a horde of deadlings descended upon them, while an army of dark figures ominously stood on the distant horizon, observing the chaos. All witnesses recount seeing shadows swirling and weaving around the revenants as they stood guard, a silent presence.

The most disturbing part is the dark beast they’ve described, with glowing ruby red eyes, pacing among the army. Without a doubt, the Shadoweaver has awakened, and its pet is lurkingin our realm, searching for something. But just because the Shadoweaver is awake, doesn't mean he has been freed from his prison.

“What is it?” Raiden's voice is urgent as he makes his way over.

“Fucking Alivar tried to take Everly tonight.”

Raiden’s brows slam down, his wings flaring outward. “How do you know that? I didn’t see a messenger.”

“Everly told me.”

“You can mind speak over this distance?” His voice is incredulous.

“Looks like it. I could sense her heightened emotions and was able to hold the connection for a brief time.”

“Well, shit. That will come in handy.”

“Someone allowed him access to the fucking castle, Raiden!”

Raiden’s eyes harden. “And we will find them.”

“I’m heading back.” I stalk over Storm.

“We only arrived a few hours ago!” Raiden snaps, following me.

“I don’t care. I never should have left her behind.”

“Don’t be a fool.”

I spin my face inches from Raiden. “She is my mate.”

“We need to get to the bottom of what happened here.”

“We know what happened here,” I growl.

Raiden lets out a deep sigh and runs his hand through his hair, right between his horns.

“I will gather the men and explain what has happened.”

“Thanks. I will go and talk to the villagers. We will leave half the soldiers here to help the survivors in any way they can. These men will provide necessary aid such as medical assistance, distributing food and water, and assisting with search and rescueefforts. They will also help in setting up temporary shelters and providing emotional support to those affected by the disaster. They are to ensure the safety and well-being of the survivors until we can send more help. I want to ride full speed all night, so only those who can keep up are to come.”

Raiden nods in agreement and turns, his footsteps crunching on the forest floor as he makes his way over to the campsite to gather the soldiers.

Everly

Restless, I shift in bed. Kian’s currently sprawled lazily on the sofa, the gentle sound of his snores filling the room. I punch my pillow a few times and flop back down. Nymeria and Anika are curled up at the end of the bed, fast asleep. Seeing everyone else sleeping so peacefully only intensifies my frustration.
