“No,” I answered without thinking.

“No?” she clarified.

“I mean, yes,” I said, nodding. I rubbed between my eyebrows and laughed softly. “Sorry, I wasn’t thinking when I answered and had a moment.”

“No, it’s fine,” she laughed and typed something. “Is he here today?”

“No, he’s away at work, but he will be at the next appointment,” I said, and she nodded.

“Okay, so let’s get started,” she said, clapping her hands. “I know it’s scary, but I want you one, two, or three steps closer to having a baby girl with your smile or a baby boy with his eyes. It’s my dream for you.”

The thought of a baby with my smile filled my mind, and I couldn’t help but want the same thing. A baby girl with my smile and a baby boy with his eyes. Someone knocked on the door, and I looked up as it opened. The same young lady from the front desk stuck her head inside.

“Hey, sorry to interrupt, but your husband is here,” she said, looking at me and smiling. “You want me to bring him back here, or are you transitioning?”

“Here is fine,” Dr. Holding said, and she nodded.

“As soon as he’s off the phone, I’ll send him back,” she said, then disappeared just as quickly as she entered.

“I’m going to apologize now,” I said once she was gone. Dr. Holding smirked and lifted her brow. “Amethyst is my best friend, not my husband.”

She asked, “Amethyst Stone?” and I nodded. “You’re the best friend that he always talks about?”

“You know Amethyst?” I wasn’t surprised because he was a doctor at this hospital.

“We have lunch at least once a month and argue about sports,” she answered with a laugh. “I’m surprised we’re just meeting. You’re all he talks about. I swear, for a while I thought you were a figment of his imagination.”

“Nope,” I laughed. “I’m real and here trying to have a baby.”

“Well, let’s make it a reality,” she said. The door opened, and Dr. Holding’s smile dropped. “Can I help you?”

“I was told my wife was back here,” Grant said, and I quickly turned around to see him standing in the door. The look he gave Dr. Holding made me look between them. There was an apparent tension between the two. Grant gave her a single nod, then turned to me and smiled. “Hey, I’ve been trying to call you since last night and tell you I would be here.”

“Hey,” I said, standing. Grant approached me, and I hugged him. He kissed me on the cheek, then stepped back and sat in the empty chair beside me.

“Dr. Holding, this is my husband, Grant. Grant, this is the woman who’s going to help us bring a baby into the world.”

“Right,” Dr. Holding said. She gave Grant one more look, then turned to me and smiled sweetly. “With your smile.”

“And his eyes,” I said, finishing her statement. The thing was that Grant’s eyes weren’t the eyes I ever wanted my baby to have.

Chapter eleven

Amethyst

“How do you want to move?” Pyrite asked from his desk.

I looked up from my word search to find his attention on the large window to his right. His arms were crossed, and his head was back. To the outside world, he looked relaxed, but I knew better. Pyrite was holding himself still because he was ready to move and shake shit up, but he knew this was my fight and was waiting on me to decide how we moved.

“I want to kill him,” I answered, and he nodded. “Snatch that nigga up and never let him see the next day.”

“And Yale?” Citrine asked from his spot next to me. I looked over to see him focusing on his laptop. He’d gotten back in town early this morning and hadn’t stopped moving since the plane landed. “What are you going to do about her?”

“What do you mean?” I questioned him.

“When you kill Grant, how are you going to be there for her?” he replied, and I shrugged. “Nah, you need a plan because she’s going to need you to mourn that nigga.”

“Mourn him?” I questioned him, and he nodded in response. Citrine looked up at me and smirked. “Nigga, have you ever thought about the fact that he’s her husband, and even though this shit was a business deal for you, it wasn’t one for her?”
