Declan turns to point at the limes. “We were going to get some of those. We should have bought them earlier today, but we forgot.”

“You needed to get limes now?” I ask.

Declan winks.

Kaito points at the two of us. “I didn’t know you were midnight shopping friends.”

“What does that mean?” I ask.

“Well, we are,” Noah answers at the same time. “We were … watching a movie.”

I glance at Noah. Maybe admitting to spending hours studying the night before an assignment is too nerdy for his reputation.

Declan perks up. “What movie?”

“Inception,” Noah answers.

“Northanger Abbey,” I answer at the same time.

We stare at each other. Fuck.

Declan and Kaito stare at us, and we stand in awkward silence. Can Noah and I say goodbye and leave now? I want to run away. And eat some chocolate.

Noah coughs.

I look at my food.

Declan clicks his finger and points at me. “You know what, Knightly? You should come to the party we’re having next Friday.”

I blink. “Um. Who’s we?”

“My brother and I,” he explains. “It’s at his house, but I’m hosting too.”

“No, you’re not,” Kaito says.

“Yeah, I am,” Declan says to Kaito, then looks at me. “Hasn’t Noah told you about it? He’s going too.”

Noah’s eyes slide to mine. “I am.”

“How can you go and not invite your girlfriend?” Kaito asks him. “Knightly, you’re going. It’s going to be great.”

“It will behella epic,” Declan says.

“Eve’s not my girlfriend,” Noah says.

“We’re friends,” I explain.

“Okay. Sure,” Kaito says slowly. “The invite still stands.”

I don’t know what to say, so I nod.

“Awesome! Get Noah to give you the details and feel free to bring friends. The more the merrier,” Declan says.

“Okay. Thanks.”

Noah shifts his body, ready to leave. “Well, Eve and I better get going — but good to see you here. Enjoy your limes,” he says with a smile.

“Oh, we will,” Declan says. “Enjoy your night, lovebirds.”
