“We should go now.Maybe we’ll find the bedroom first and take out those guys.”
Cally nodded, and they quietly headed down the hall. They were lucky that the bedroom chosen by the two was on the way.She peeked in and saw that the two guys were lying on the bed, sleeping deeply.Carlos pushed past her, and she followed him in.They each took a guy and handcuffed them before they woke up.That wasn't going to be good enough, and as they sat up, she stunned them.Since they were humans, that should be enough. Now it was time to head for the main group. They would attempt to take them all out, provided they were all in the living room.
Carlos was trying to be protective, and he pushed his way ahead of her.Males could be so silly because she was as capable of taking care of herself as he was.Maybe more so since males often underestimated her abilities. She wasn't going to worry about it, and she followed him to the living room, where a bunch of guys were talking and disagreeing. Some of them wanted to go outside and hunt her down. Those two would be glad to know it wouldn't be a problem for very long. The others just wanted to sit there and wait until she showed up.A good argument against the guys who wanted to go outside was: what if she called someone, and she wasn't the only one who came to the door?
Cally had called someone, but she wasn't sure how long it would take for them to arrive. They would do this on their own, but whoever arrived would deal with the prisoners. She and Carlos needed to get back to work as soon as possible. All this messing around was getting them behind on their field work. She just stepped into the room with both stun guns and started blasting away. Those guys just stared at her with their mouths open and let her take them out. Were they stupid or just easy to surprise? That was hard to say, but there were six of them, and she got all of them. Her mate began to restrain them, and it was only moments later that there was a knock at the door.A warden was there, followed quickly by guys from Carlos' pack.
That warden turned out to be the same one who had shown up last time, Elmo.“What is going on here?”He asked.
She was a little annoyed because it seemed to her that it was easy to see what was going on here, so she just let Carlos explain.
“These guys are attacking all our locations. They are humans, but they managed to surprise me and capture me.They beat me up and were going to kill me, but my mate managed to save me.”
“Looks like she did a good job taking them out.”Elmo winked at her.
He should know better than to flirt with the newly mated female.Apparently, this warden had a lot to learn.Maybe he was just young, and the only other explanation was that he was dumb. She couldn't imagine someone stupid getting a job like that. The word had always been that it was hard to get a warden job, that many skills were required, or maybe that you needed to know somebody who had influence.Elmo was getting to work, gathering as many prisoners as he could stuff in his truck. There was no way he would get them all, but she thought he was trying to get as many as he could before they had a chance to change their mind.
They'd kept prisoners last time, and she didn't think Damon had been happy about it.This time, they would have to keep a couple because they just wouldn't fit in the warden's vehicle.Cally could only hope that the ones that were left behind were the better guys. Those who were going were probably going to a bad place, and some of them would deserve that. She just wasn't sure that all of them did. They found no homeowners, so they could only assume that this had been a setup and that no one had ordered security monitoring. This place would be marked off the list, and they headed to the next one.
The work would have to go fast so they could try to catch up on all the time they had lost. They brought lunch, so they didn't have to stop anywhere or take the time to fix anything. It helped because they could work better when they were fed properly. With the wedding looming, they needed to get ahead as much as they could because they would have to take some time off then.Even with the extra people, they were only catching up slowly.Tyne was happy because business was booming, but he was also worried because they were having such a hard time keeping up.Customers didn't like waiting, especially when there wasn't an active natural event to blame.
No one understood the excuse that we just don't have enough people to get the job done.At least they were moving forward and not slipping behind. They'd held off on running any ads or any specials until they got the list under control.Tyne had finally learned some patience because in Alaska, she'd heard that he'd run these specials even though they were hopelessly behind. It was possible that Ariel had spoken to him and alerted him to the fact that they were having a wedding, and that would make it harder for them to catch up.
Cally didn't care why.She was just glad that he was taking it easy on them.As they worked through their locations, she fantasized about the wedding. The honeymoon would have to wait until later, but it was still something she was looking forward to.She thought that Carlos had been working on a plan for their getaway. She'd seen a picture of Hawaii on his computer screen, and that was someplace she had always wanted to go.To be honest, she had a long list of places she had always wanted to go.There were places both hot and cold that she would like to see.A honeymoon was just an excuse to go see some of those places.
“We’re done.Ready to load up and get home?”He asked.
It was obvious that she'd been so lost in her thoughts that she hadn't realized they were done. That's how important the wedding and eventually the honeymoon were to her.Three days before, her relatives would descend upon them, and the next day would be the wedding. It was amazing how some people could plan such a big event in so little time. They loaded up everything and headed back to the office. When they turned in the list, Carlos had to explain that the first location hadn't worked out.
The secretaries really didn't understand because they didn't realize that she and Carlos had been under regular attack since they had started fieldwork. They thought that if they stopped doing fieldwork, the attention would just shift to one of their field crews, and they couldn't allow that. They were finally headed home, and home was what this would be for her.It felt a little odd calling the pack house home, but eventually she was sure she would get used to it.
“Your mind is in the clouds,” Carlos observed.
“We have a lot going on, so there's a lot to think about.”
“Is it our troubles or is it the wedding that is coming up?”
“A little of both. The wedding is a pleasant thing to think about while the troubles are just that, troubles.”Cally admitted.
“I know that things are easier on me because you are here.I appreciate everything that you do and how you saved me today.”
She knew that it was hard for an alpha to admit because they always felt like they had to be on top of everything. It made her feel like there was some hope that he wouldn't be one of those controlling alphas that always had to be right about everything and could never admit to any weaknesses.
“It's what I do, and I will always do for you. It's also what you will do for me, and I know that.We are a team.”
“There is no one I would rather be with than you. You're right, and we are a team, a perfect team.”Carlos expressed.
If he weren't driving, she would have given him a hug and a kiss. She would have to wait until they got home, but that's exactly what she planned to do once they were inside. That was where they finally ended up.As much as she wanted to hug and kiss him, the smell of an amazing meal hit her nose, and her stomach growled like a monster.Carlos did too.It wouldn't hurt to grab a bite first, would it?That seemed to be what he wanted to do as well, and so they got the food out and began to eat. There was no talking because they were both hungry and focused on their food until they were done.
“I feel better now that we've eaten,” Carlos admitted.
“Me too.Since I've changed, my appetite has been much stronger, and my need for food is greater.”
“That's just part of being a wolf.”
She knew that was true, and before she'd gone through the change, Ariel had explained all that to her.It was true that she hadn't really understood how different the need to eat and the amount she needed to eat would be, but she knew it now. There were many differences between humans and wolves. Her senses were so much better, and she was stronger and faster than she had ever been. Her wolf was also inside her head, and it was like having a best friend that you took everywhere with you.Cally had worried about making the change, but she had to admit she had not regretted it.She’d even encouraged her mother to do it, but she refused.
Many of her family had gone through the change, some by mating and others through Ariel’s ceremony. She had to admit, even with all the advice she’d gotten before her change, she was still learning things about being a wolf. The things she was learning now were mainly about a fated mate and how to handle an alpha wolf.
