The pause that followed stretched long enough for Riven to feel every breath in the room. Then the Matriarch turned fully toward him, sharp as a blade.

“You entered this House with no name of ours, no allegiance, no blood tie. And yet you have stood against our enemies. You have bled for us.”

Her gaze flicked briefly to Thane, then back.

“And more importantly—you were chosen.”

There was no doubt in the room who had done the choosing.

“But you, too, must choose. You came to us bound in service. You have fulfilled that in this short time. Your debt to us is clear. You can walk out of here at this moment, without consequence. Or you can accept this invitation. Each of the people in this hall are Virellien, and we extend to you this invitation. You may join us here, become Virellien.”

Riven knew this was happening, and still the words created a knot deep in his chest. He looked to Thane, who simply watched him expectantly.

It was a choice—but was it? When he stepped through the doors of the estate to save his sister, all he could think about was when he could be free of this place, these people, and nowhe could not imagine stepping back again through those doors to leave.

With a trembling voice he said, “It is an honor, and one I humbly accept.”

“From this day forward,” the Matriarch said, her voice softer now but no less final, “you are of House Virellien. What you were before is not erased, but it is transformed. You are one of us.”

A hush fell again, heavier this time, as though the room itself needed a second to absorb what had just been made real.

Riven didn’t know if there was some formal response expected. He didn’t move. Thane hadn’t said a word, but he stood beside Riven like a shadow with teeth, radiating quiet, possessive pride. And then the crowd burst into applause and Thane seized him once more, drawing him in close.

Before Thane could say a word, Riven kissed him softly. “Yours.”
