“I don’t understand what’s happening here, but perhaps you all should discuss it privately before—”
“It’s come to our attention that fated mates may in fact be bound through the ages.”
All attention is on Zephyr.
“And what makes you believe something so fantastical?”
“I think we Cursed all have a certain… being… inside of us.” Nyxeris looks around the room, her free hand coming up to grasp her sternum, the rest of us absently following suit. “Well, Zeph and I had a little talk through ours.”
“Throughthe creatures?” Willow looks dumbfounded.
“Yes. Nyx’s was the one that divulged this bombshell, though not in great detail. It said something about finding each other again and again through the ages. That we’re not always successful.”
Nyxeris leaves Mira’s side to join Zephyr, who embraces her in a very protective stance, as though we’re still in a battle and she needs the security he provides.
“This is…” Willow blinks and shakes her head. “This would change everything. Again.”
“We’ll need to research.” Jory picks up his tablet from the nearby table. “Nyx, do you think that you could get your entity to speak through you again?”
“I’d like to try. We need to know the truth.” She peers up at Zephyr. “If you’re okay with it.” She looks to Erich and then me. “All of you, actually. I think it would be easier to achieve as a pack.”
“Of course.” I don’t even have to consider it.
“We’ll be there.” Erich doesn’t either. “I always wanted to know more about it.”
It’s Zephyr who sighs and closes his eyes, hugs Nyxeris tighter. “I’ll be your strength.” His words are like air.
And then something unbelievable happens.
Zephyr begins to purr.
Zephyr
The beast in my chest stretches like a cat, lithe and nimble, and lets out a purr so loud, I jump backward, releasing Nyx from my embrace, and almost fall on my arse.
I fist my chest, vision swimming as I look at Nyx’s shocked face.
“Zeph…”
“It isn’t me.” The words come out in a rush. “It’s the… whatever it is.” My fist squeezes tighter.
Nyx is before me in a blink, her hand covering my fist. “These entities are a part of us. This purr is a part of you, too.”
My brow furrows at the thought. In all the time I’d wished I could purr for my Omega, why is this being choosing now to do it for me?
I’ve never communicated with the creature before. I don’t count when it took me over.
Apologies…
My body snaps to attention with a start, eyes wide. For what?
It takes a moment to receive a response.Hurt. Anguish. I give you my purr. For our mate.
My eyes grow hotter and I choke on a sob before crushing Nyx in a fresh bear hug, relishing in how she snuggles into my vibrating chest.
Erich and Laurant are visibly shocked as they approach, encircle us both in their arms.
But they don’t purr with me.
