“Is that someone you want to be? Would you like to be my girlfriend?”

I smiled so big it made my face hurt. “Yeah, I wanna be your girlfriend, V. Do you want to be mine?” God, I hoped she did. Otherwise I was going to be crushed.

“Why, Lea, I would love to be your girlfriend,” she said, smiling just as big.

“Really?” I just needed to make sure.

“Really, really, really, really.”

She kissed a different part of my face with each repetition and had me giggling. There was that champagne feeling again. Bubbling over and making me float.

“That’s a lot of reallys.”

“Well, I’m really serious about it. About you. And us.”

Vail’s eyes were intent on mine. “I want this to work,” she whispered.

“Me too,” I whispered back.

We were interrupted by the kittens pouncing on the bed and making me jump. I’d have to get used to kitty interruptions going forward. As long as they didn’t jump on us during coitus, we’d be good. That was bound to happen, though. There would be awkward moments and fights and difficulties. Things were bright and shiny and new and sexy right now, but there would be challenges. We’d have to fight for each other. I didn’t know how, but I was going to learn. She was worth it. We were worth it.

“You’re thinking some very serious thoughts over there,” Vail said, noticing my silence. She noticed everything.

“Nothing important,” I said, shaking my head and then yawning. This weekend had been a lot. I was ready to get back to my regular life. My new regular life.

Vail would go into her recording booth and I’d drag her out to play with the kittens and eat and get sunshine. She’d shut my laptop and take off her clothes and remind me that I didn’t have to work all the time. We’d balance each other. Together.

Chapter Thirty-Two

Vail

A lot could changein one weekend.

Monday morning, I woke up and for a fraction of a second, I was terrified that there was someone in my bed. Then I rolled over and remembered that it was Lea. Right.

Lea with one of the kittens sleeping on her head. I couldn’t stop smiling as I grabbed the other kitten and gave her a good morning kiss. Figuring my girl wanted to stay in bed a while longer, I started my morning as I usually did, only I waited to get breakfast started to see what Lea might want. I’d actually gotten pancake mix and blueberries at the store, along with cream cheese frosting that I figured I could sort of melt and drizzle over the top. Not quite cheesecake, but the breakfast equivalent.

If she wanted it.

Having someone in my space was so new. It was going to be an adjustment. Should I wake her up? Should I wait?

I sipped my morning tea and went back upstairs to get dressed, moving as quietly as I could.

Normally I’d have already eaten breakfast by this time and would be heading to my recording booth to start my morning vocal exercises and go over my schedule and notes for the day. But what should I do with Lea here? She had her own schedule to keep and I didn’t know how to mesh it with mine.

I went to the bathroom to fix my hair and do my makeup, and by the time I came out, her alarm was going off and she was groaning and cursing at it.

Walking over to her side of the bed, I bent down.

“Good morning, gorgeous,” I said. Her eyes were a little puffy as she blinked at me.

“Good morning.” Her voice was rough from sleep. She was still the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.

She did that thing where she puckered for a kiss and I gave it to her.

Lea sat up and combed her fingers through her hair, yawning.

“I don’t want to rush you, but I was wondering what you wanted to do about breakfast. I can make us both something. Or we can each do our own thing?” Figuring out meals wasn’t something I’d thought of when it came to adjusting to a new relationship. I’d grown too used to being entirely on my own.
