“Not that I know of.”

“Did you spend the holidays together?”

“Yes.”

“Is he your best friend?”

“Yes.”

“Is he on your mind right before you go to sleep at night and first thing when you wake up?

I know I have a silly smile on my face as I answer in the affirmative.

“Then you’re a couple, girlfriend.”

I’m still protesting, even though I know she’s right. “Well, he hasn't told me he feels that way about me.”

“Think about it. Why would he when he clearly thinks you’re only interested in a fuck buddy. So, what are you going to do about it?”

Shit. She’s right. I almost lost him altogether because I wasn’t willing to be more than that initially. WhatamI going to do about it? I don’t want to ruin the good thing we have going now. And, despite what Meg is telling me, the little voice in my head reminds me I’m still afraid of rejection. Afraid of losing someone I care about. “I don’t know. Things are good the way they are. As Nana would say, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’”

“Well, Nana would also say, ‘Don’t be a fool.’ You need to figure this out. I can’t have my maid of honor and Drew’s best man at cross purposes.”

I jump out of the chair in excitement. “What? Oh my God! Congratulations!”

“Don’t get all huggy with me again. You’ve got work to do. We need dresses, flowers, and all that bride stuff. I’m counting on you. Don’t let me down.”

“Girl, you know you’ve come to the right place. Let me get my notebook. We’ve got a wedding to plan!”

Chapter 30

Nolan whistled as he worked. He was always content and mellow after spending an evening with Sally. Last night was comfortable as well. Relaxing in front of the TV and chatting about their days. He could get used to that life. His musings were interrupted as Drew approached and, as was his habit, leaned on the doorframe, clearing his throat to get Nolan’s attention.

“Hey, old man.”

“Hey, yourself.”

“I can hear yer whistlin’ all the way out in the work area. What’s your good mood all about? Come to think of it, you always seem to be in a good mood these days. Things must be pretty good between you and Sally.”

“What’s it to ya, boy? You know I don’t talk about my business.” His demeanor softened his words.

Drew entered the office and sat in the chair in front of Nolan’s desk. “Well, maybe you should.”

Nolan scrubbed a hand over his face and leaned back in his chair. “We don’t need to be gossipin’ like a couple of hens. But, I will say this, I don’t think I’ll ever figure women out.”

Drew chuckled. “I hear ya on that. But we’re happier with ’em than without ’em, that’s for sure. Best day of my life was when Meg came back to town.”

Nolan quipped. “That’s for sure. You kickin’ tires and wanderin’ around here like you lost your best friend was not good for business.”

“Well, I got even more good news for ya. Meg and I are plannin’ a weddin’.”

Nolan practically leaped out from behind his desk, enthusiastically sticking out his hand in congratulations.

“Thanks, old man. I actually have a favor to ask. Seems I’ll be needin’ a best man.”

Nolan suddenly grew serious. “I’d be honored.”

“It gets better. Meg’s payin’ Sally a visit today. She’s gonna ask her to be her maid of honor. So, you’ll both be in the weddin’ party.”
