“Yes, please lie still, you are very lucky to be here. Can you describe any pains you might be experiencing?” The doctor was examining her and could see there were numerous cuts, scrapes and bruises but he did not notice anything of visible concern. No external bleeding or burns were evident, nor were any broken bones apparent. He said, “We’ll want to determine if you have any internal injuries.”
Another nurse standing next to him was explaining to him in Chinese what she had learned from the men who had brought Missy into the emergency room. “This girl somehow survived when three cars all exploded but she was the only one who did. Fire completely destroyed those three cars and whoever else might have been inside them.”
The doctor nodded and said, “Okay, we need to thoroughly examine this young woman.” Looking at Missy, he told her in Russian, “We’ll get you admitted now and a nurse will help you remove all your clothing so she can clean and treat all your cuts. Someone will come to give you an EKG exam right here and then we’ll put you in a room where we can closely monitor you. We will also be taking you for both CT and MRI exams … we need to make certain you don’t have any internal injuries which need treatment.”
Missy realized her body wouldn’t fully heal until she Shifted but that wouldn’t be happening anytime soon. The hospital needed to do their normal routine for victims such as herself. Knowing the police would eventually want to interview her, she resigned herself to just going along with whatever was necessary. Things were going to take a while.
Her phone and the identification items which had been in her purse were gone now. Fortunately, she had left her passport back in her room.
The doctor asked, “Is there anyone we can notify for you? And can you tell us your name please?”
“My name is MissyKabachnik and we are from Moscow. I am here with Yury Borisovich … can you tell me if he is okay?” Missy knew Yury was dead but she wanted to play her role as a normal victim.
The doctor did not wish to answer her question and instead he asked, “What about someone local, Missy? Someone who was not travelling with you when your car was in that accident.”
Missy thought for a moment and then said, “You can contact Mr. Jiakum Wu. We had dinner with him at our hotel last night. That’s the Citadines Ritan Hotel here in Beijing. I’m sure they can help you locate him.”
When the doctor was finished with her he introduced another nurse who had come over, saying, “Nurse Mei will stay with you tonight. She speaks Russian so she will understand you if you need to ask for anything. One of our doctors will come see you in the morning to explain how all your tests come out.” He then departed and was soon on the phone with the concierge at the Citadines.

It was Marie who first noticed the news over in China about Yury Borisovich being assassinated. With Missy being over in Beijing, she had her software tracking the news outlets over there for various names and words which might trigger an alert. She quickly pulled up all the reports which were online describing the three car explosions. She and Lisa were at their home and she quickly yelled for Lisa to come join her.
They soon managed to watch the video which was going viral that showed Missy being dragged away from the burningcars. No identification was given for her on that video or in any of the other news reports but they recognized Missy’s dark red hair. They were greatly relieved on hearing she had been rushed to the hospital and was supposedly in critical condition. Whether or not she was expected to survive was unknown but since she wasn’t being reported as having died, they felt encouraged.
“How that girl manages to always save herself should probably not surprise us,” exclaimed Lisa. “She credits those Fabulous Fates she’s always talking about and I’m beginning to believe in them.”
Marie grinned and said, “Oh, she convinced me about them a long time ago. We need to learn all we can about this assassination and learn more about what’s happening over there with poor Missy.” She picked up her phone and placed a call to Missy’s cell phone but that went directly to voicemail which was not a surprise.
“Okay, I’ll get word out to the SOD Group,” said Lisa. “Why don’t you give Mike a call so he hears this from you before learning about it from anyone else.”

When Doctor Zhang came into Missy’s room that morning, he found her sitting up in bed and very alert. He had been selected for her follow-on care since he was fluent in Russian in addition to being one of the senior residents at the hospital. He introduced himself and then asked her how shewas doing. After everything he had reviewed about this unusual patient, she was not at all what he was expecting.
Missy smiled and said, “I’m doing well and hoping someone will give me some news about what happened yesterday. No one will say whether my Yury is okay or how any of the others in our cars is doing. I’m guessing the news is all bad but I don’t want to abandon hope. Can you tell me anything?”
Doctor Zhang sadly stated, “I’m sorry, Miss Kabachnik, but you are the only one who survived. The police are investigating why those three cars were blown up. They are convinced explosives were used and this was done to assassinate Yury Borisovich. Later … when you are feeling up to it … they would like to interview you. I have held them off while our hospital ran its tests on you.”
Missy nodded and said, “Well, I am very sad about Yury and those others. I will be happy to talk to any investigators.” She studied the doctor for a few moments and then asked, “How did all your tests on me come out? I’m feeling okay, all things considered. Your nurses were very nice and bandaged me up last night and again this morning.” She gestured at the various bandages which were visible on her exposed arms, neck and face.
Doctor Zhang and several other doctors had spent an hour discussing what those test results had shown. Incredibly, this young woman had sustained no apparent injuries from the car explosion or from her miraculous ejection from the car out onto the street other than those superficial ones which Missy was gesturing towards. Her EKG and MRI scan were okay but her CT scan did reveal something very strange. Although there was nothing associated with this recent event, there werea number of places where numerous bones of hers had been broken repeatedly. Somehow, those had all healed up just fine. Never had they seen what appeared to have been abuse as bad as what all this seemed to show. And, now that he was seeing her in person? He wasn’t sure just what to believe.
Then, of course, there had been the physical description from Nurse Mei about all those scars. Not only had Missy been mauled by some wild animal with claw marks left to heal untreated without stitches or medical treatment but there also were all those bullet wounds. Her thigh had been grazed and there were three bullet holes, one in her abdomen and two on her upper chest with an exit wound on her back where one bullet had gone right through. Nurse Mei had also noticed how Missy’s body seemed very athletic. While she was curvy and voluptuous, her muscles were very toned and rock hard and her body fat was surprisingly low.
Missy suspected the hospital had noticed many unusual things about herself which they might want her to explain. She, of course, wanted to be released as soon as possible without satisfying their curiosity. Let them believe it was all because she was Russian!
Doctor Zhang had been watching Missy’s facial expression and, while she wasn’t revealing much, he could sense she was anxious to leave. “Your tests came out okay but we would like to monitor you for a little longer. I’m glad to hear you say you are feeling okay.”
Missy could sense there was more going on and suspected she knew what that might be. She asked, “Was the hospital able to contact Mr. Jiakun Wu on my behalf?” She knew he had a great deal of influence with the Chinese government and mightalready have made it known that he wanted her to receive the best of care and was taking a great deal of interest in her case.
The doctor confirmed her guess and with a smile he said, “Yes, we did. In fact, he has insisted on seeing you as soon as possible. While the police have insisted on interviewing you before you see anyone else, he has convinced them to allow him to be with them during that interview.”
“Okay, I can understand that,” agreed Missy feeling a certain amount of relief. “He can act as my interpreter should your police not speak Russian very well.” She was pretty sure whoever the police were sending would know Russian very well but she figured saying this would sound good.
“I can insist that you need more time before you are up to being interviewed,” suggested Doctor Zhang. “We would like to run a few more tests …”
