“What?”
“You’re going to tell me I got laid last night.”
“Uh... no. I was going to tell youIgot laid last night. But congratulations to us both.”
“Oh.” He was mildly stunned. “Wow. Wasn’t expecting that.”
“I’ve been dying to tell you, but I had to go home and get cleaned up first.”
“Wait, a minute. The last time I saw you, Rachel was letting you know about Gertie.”
“Yeah. She went with me and... we never left. Spent the night in my office.”
“Get. The. Fuck. Out.”
“What? I thought you’d be happy for me.”
“I am. But I was here too. All night.”
May’s eyes grew large. They burst out laughing.
“I came running out here to tell you about me, and you’re telling me the same about you? What are we, teenagers? Twins, separated at birth?”
May began to speak, then raised a finger, “I should look at our cards.”
“I went home this morning too, had to meet Zac here. I assumed you were asleep. We must have just missed each other.”
“Yeah. And these walls are thin. But you didn’t hear us, and we didn’t hear you.Right?”
“God, no! Could you imagine?”
“No... and I don’t want to,” she said. “But I am surprised. I pictured Fabio as being veryexpressivein the sack. You know—the vocal type.”
George said nothing, a slow grin creeping up his cheeks.
“What?” May said, then gasped. “Oh, my God. It wasn’t Fabio, was it? It was that other guy—Ned. Mikey ended up with Fabio and you ended up with Ned.”
“No. It was Mikey... again.”
May screamed.“I knew it! I knew it!”
“No, you didn’t... and consider furthering your psychic education. I believe Dionne Warwick has a MasterClass.”
“You and Mikey were over here getting it on while Rachel and I were next door. That’s crazy.”
“Yeah.” George grinned. “It is. So, what do you think of her?”
Her smile said it all. “She’s pretty amazing. The shelter has been her focus for decades, but—with Jack and Demarco encouraging—she says she’s ready to get out there again. She was an activist too. Did you know that?”
“How would I know that?”
“She was in ACT UP. She knew Larry Kramer.”
“Wow. That’s impressive.”
“But as far as us—personally, we just clicked. We’re taking it slow, though.”
“Doesn’t sound like it.”
