snowmobile, watching the flakes land on it, gradually changing the color from black to white.
"Did you bring the cover?" Tyler asked, coming up behind him.
"Is this a trick question?"
"There was a vinyl cover in the shed… so when the snow melts, it doesn't get everything wet."
"Oh."
"It could also re-freeze, then you'll just have an over-sized snowmobile sculpture. You won't think it's so funny when you're trying to chip your way back into it."
Alec braced himself for another scolding by the man who's mood he had witnessed change so
fast an hour ago, but Tyler only shook his head with resignation.
"I'll take care of it tomorrow."
"What would I do without you?"
"I'm beginning to wonder."
They walked a short distance over to a small barn-like shed, similar to the one at the cabin.
Tyler opened one of the doors and turned on the light. Brandy was harnessed inside. He removed the blanket from her and jogged back to the snow-mobile with it, tossing it evenly over the machine as if making a bed.
"It's nice they have this garage to park your horses in."
"I built it."
"Oh," said Alec, looking around the small structure.
"Not too many people use horses for transportation anymore, " Tyler said, returning. "But it's here to use if they do. And I do."
Alec watched how gentle Tyler was with Brandy, stroking her mane and neck. He reached into
the saddlebag and removed a flask. He took a sip and then offered it to Alec.
Alec held his hands up. "I think I've had enough."
"Doctor's orders. It'll keep you warm."
Alec sipped from the flask and fiery bourbon filled his mouth. He swallowed fast and began
coughing.
"Man up, Alec. It'll put hair on your chest," said Tyler, putting his foot in the stirrup to mount.
"Watch out."
Alec ducked, narrowly avoiding being kicked as Tyler swung his leg up and over the horse. His
eyes caught a brief, glimpse of the inseam crossroads at the underside of Tyler's crotch, his mind going back to teenage years and stealing forbidden glances in locker rooms. He felt woozy, and the bourbon wasn't helping. He capped the flask and returned it to the pocket on the saddle. "I've got plenty of hair on my chest," he mumbled.
"My mistake. Grab the light and the door, will you? I'll meet you outside."
Alec did as he was told and followed them out. It was snowing hard now. Tyler extended his
hand and Alec took it—just making the stirrup. He pulled him up and onto the horse behind him.
