Just then, Jane’s head lifts, a twig snaps behind me, and I look over my shoulder to find my husband just a few feet behind me. His hair’s a bit lighter after a summer in the sun, both from working the farm and a week in the Bahamas over summer break.

“Hey, Jane,” he says softly, putting an arm around my waist and pulling my back to his chest. His hand rests on my stomach, and warmth moves through me. “What haven’t you told me?”

A wash of nerves hits, but I take in a deep breath, smiling at Jane before turning in Jesse’s arms.

“How do you feel about another unplanned pregnancy?” I ask, and his brow furrows.

“What?”

“Okay, so it wasn’t necessarily unplanned this time, but I haven’t really had time to think of a fun way to announce it to you. I kind of just headed out to find you.” He stares at me for a beat before his face clears, hesitant excitement on his face.

“You’re pregnant?” he asks.

“I took a test this morning after Emma got on the bus. It was positive.” I bite my lip, even though I have no reason to be nervous.

“Really?” he asks, hesitant excitement in the word, and I lift a shoulder before nodding.

He lifts me, that giant grin on his face as he spins me around, and I giggle. Jane and her baby trot off, but I’m barely paying attention as his lips press to mine, hard and deep.

“You’re having my baby,” he whispers.

With watery eyes, I nod, then giggle as he lifts me again, then makes his way back to our house to remind me just how beautiful our forever is.

Eight months later, Emma’s brother, Peter Colton King, is welcomed into our little family.
