It was time for a break. From the past. From the frustrations of not finding a spark with Isabella and from the prospect of a future where neither of us really got what we needed.
“No way!”
I looked to Isabella as we pulled into the parking lot of the Flip and Fly. What better way to forget everything going on around us than by jumping on a bunch of trampolines? Although, in my opinion, anything could be romantic, it wasn’t something that was naturally associated with trampolines. Today, all I wanted us to focus on was our friendship and having fun.
“Yup. After the realization that our list of hobbies was thin, I figured we needed to explore some activities to try to rectify it. First thing on the list is trampolines.”
She was so excited she nearly bounced out of the car and toward the building. I grabbed a bag from the trunk and was glad that I had gotten some activewear for Isabella. I’m pretty sure bouncing around in that skirt would not be her ideal situation. As if suddenly realizing, she frowned.
“I can’t flip around on trampolines in this.”
Laughing, I tossed her the gym bag.
“It’s a good thing your best friend thought of that in advance.”
Her eyes brightened as she looked in the bag.
“You really are the best!”
Draping my arm over her shoulder, we headed inside and I started to tease her.
“You know, I’m starting to get a little concerned that you always seem to say that as if it’s such a surprise.”
Isabella rolled her eyes.
“I do not!”
After paying and signing the waivers, Isabella hurried to change. Although I had never been here before, it did look pretty awesome, and I found myself getting even more excited. When Isabella was back at my side, a guy named Josh came over to explain the rules and show us the different attractions. After the tour was over, the tour guide turned to us.
“You guys go to Truman, right? I think I’ve seen you both around the hallways.”
We looked surprised, mostly because I made a point of being invisible after that first week, and Isabella seemed to just be invisible naturally. Not that I understood that. If anyone should stand out in the middle of the crowd, it was my Isabella.
“Yes, we do.”
Josh smiled.
“Juniors?”
Isabella nodded.
“Yes.”
The dude seemed super upbeat. His energy was almost contagious.
“Awesome. Are you loving Mrs. Rogers’s history assignment? I’m feeling so hyped about it. I feel like I got paired with exactly the right person. Is that weird? We both have issues, like all teens, but the things about myself that make me insecure are natural to her, and the things that make her nervous are natural to me. So, we are just learning from each other and sort of balance each other.”
Josh blushed after he said all of that but Isabella nodded and reached out to squeeze his arm.
“I know the feeling. I’m positive I got paired with the exact person I needed in my life too.”
Josh nodded and then looked at me and back at Isabella and laughed.
“You guys got each other, didn’t you?”
I nodded.
