“Don’t you mean weird?”
“How about unique?”
Isabella laughed at that and then looked back at the screen.
“Do you think we have time for another?”
Looking at my watch, I nodded.
“Yes. We should.”
Smiling, she took the remote and hit play. As I wrapped my arm around her, she snuggled into me but didn’t take her eyes off the show. If this was a date, I would probably have been insulted that she found the series more exciting than being in my arms. It really was a shame that there was no spark between us.
“Did you ever want to be a race car driver?”
Isabella’s question caught me off guard, but I answered quickly.
“No. I don’t think I could do it. Driving for me is more of a soothing thing. I don’t do it for the rush of adrenaline. I’m not a big adrenaline junkie, to be honest.”
Her big brown eyes met mine and she nodded.
“I love watching it, but I think I would die if anyone I cared about wanted to be a driver. It’s so dangerous.”
Squeezing her softly, I whispered, “Yes. I’m sure it must be hard for their families to watch the races.”
Resting her head against me once more, she returned to watching the show. After another few minutes, she sighed.
“This is nice.”
With a smile, I whispered, “The show?”
Shaking her head, she turned back to meet my gaze.
“The company. It’s been a while since I had someone’s arm around me. I forgot how comforting it feels.”
Nodding, I whispered, “I know the feeling.”
Just to see if maybe our last kiss was a fluke, I lowered my lips to hers and waited for that excitement I yearned for. Although I was completely not looking to drag someone into my mess, I couldn’t help but kiss her. I wanted to want Isabella for some reason. Even now, when neither of us were ready for it. She was in love with someone else and I was still trying to recover. Nothing about those facts screamed, “This is the perfect time to get involved with each other!”
When our lips parted, I looked at her wishfully. She frowned for a moment and then shook her head.
“I don’t understand what’s wrong with us.”
With a soft chuckle, I sighed.
“It could be worse. Only one of us could be feeling something and then it would be way more complicated.”
Isabella smiled.
“Look at you, finding a silver lining.”
Sighing heavily, I whispered,“It’s a very thin lining.”
Laughing, she started to pull away from me and noticed the time.
“We better get going. Papa will never let me out with you again if I miss curfew.”
Jumping up, I grabbed my keys and motioned to the door.
