Elijah Frazer was not what I imagined when I first met him. I’d expected some wealthy, privileged prick. But then, when I saw him train in the pool and how much effort he puts into his studies, our friendship grew.

Kat rubs her hands together and shoots me a smile. “Well, at least I’m rid of him now,” she says.

“You think he’ll drop it?”

Looking at the guy, I’m not sure it will be that easy. He seemed to have a major hard-on for Kat.

“I can hope,” she says, but her tone lets me know she’s not convinced.

We pull up outside the large Victorian house, which she and her fellow students are renting.

“Thanks, Jax, I really appreciate you coming to my rescue.”

“Anytime.”

The front door opens, and music blares out.

Kat groans. “Just what I need,” she hisses under her breath.

“I’m coming in,” I say before I can stop myself. “Check everything is okay. Once I know you’re safe in your room, then I’ll leave.”

I walk into the house. The base has the walls pulsing, it’s that loud.

I follow Kat past the stairs and into the kitchen. It has been extended into a large living, dining, and kitchen area. It’s packed with drunk students.

“Great,” I hear Kat hiss.

A young woman is standing by the kitchen sink, her face a mess, mascara smudged down her face.

Her eyes lock on Kat, and her face crumples again. One of the other women pulls her into her arms, while the girls around her turn and glare at Kat.

What the fuck?

My arm slides protectively around Kat’s shoulders, and I pull her into my side. She stiffens before the tension begins to ebb.

“Hope you’re proud of yourself,” one of the girls says, coming up to Kat.

“Pardon?” Kat says.

“You, Miss High and Fucking Mighty. You think you’re too fucking good for all of us. See what you’ve done to Cleo?”

“Cleo?” Kat says, her eyes wide. “She was sleeping with my boyfriend. Behind my back. How is this my fault?”

Even I can’t wait to see how they can justify this one.

“She’s loved him since she was a little girl. They grew up together.”

“And that’s my problem, how? I didn’t ask him out, he asked me.”

“He would, you’re a fucking Frazer. Mummy and Daddy’s bank balance is enough to turn anyone like Danny’s head,” she sneers.

“Then she’s better off without him if he’s that shallow. I know I am.”

I catch the girl’s hand before it connects with Kat’s cheek.

The girl stares at me wide-eyed, as if suddenly realising I’m there. I would step in, but Kat appears to have this covered, only I’m not going to allow physical violence towards her.

“Back off,” I say, shoving her hand away. “You’re directing your anger in the wrong direction.”
