My arms encircle her waist, my forehead resting against hers.

“What I want is to greet the woman I’ve not stopped thinking about all day. Then we can eat, and if there’s time…”

“I can be on board with that,” she says, pulling my head down towards hers.

CHAPTER 50

KAT

Iroll over, my mind joining the present, and I know instantly that something is wrong. Jax’s side of the bed is cold.

Sitting up, I brush my hair to one side.

His clothes are still on the floor where I dropped them. The hotel robe, however, is missing.

Pulling on my own fluffy robe and slippers, I make my way into the main area of the suite. The lights are off, except for the glow coming from under the door of the end room. Currently, it’s a spare bedroom, and the place I want to turn into an office.

I smile. He obviously decided to look at the plans, something we didn’t get around to last night, having been a little distracted pre and post dinner.

Opening the door, I step into the room. Jax has the plans spread out over the bed, frowning down at them.

“Hey,” I say, wrapping my arms around his waist and resting my head on his shoulder. “Couldn’t you sleep?”

His hands grip mine as he turns his head and smiles.

“I glanced at the plans last night before we went to bed.” His eyes darken. “Something caught my eye, and I wanted to check it out.”

I move to his side, loving how he wraps an arm around my shoulders, pulling me into him.

“What?”

“This room isn’t long enough.”

I turn my head and frown as my chest suddenly tightens.

“I’ve measured it out. It’s missing a good two metres, and there should be a third window.”

My body begins to burn up as my eyes follow the plan.

“It can’t be.”

Memories flood my system of being here with Dad when I was little. I joined him in the office forBring Your Child to Work day. Elijah wasn’t interested. He had a swim meet and the twins were still too young. It had snowed heavily, so Dad and I were forced to stay in London overnight. It was the only time I’d set foot in this suite before I moved in; after trashing the apartment I shared with Zach.

I step back in an almost dreamlike state. I close my eyes and walk towards the far wall.

“I think there used to be a door here,” I say, turning to face Jax.

“What do you mean?”

“Dad had an office installed in the suite. It’s why I thought of doing the same. Somewhere he could escape when he had an urgent project to get on top of. We never used the family suite here. It was too close to home, although I know Mum and he?—”

I pause.

I know Mum would join him here for their date nights out, and even some days. Time away from us children. Time to be a couple, one who was very much in love.

Something twists in my chest. Being here with Jax, having feelings that strong for someone else. How has she survived without Dad?

I suck in a breath.
