“Medium, well,” I say without thinking. “Please.”
“Easy done,” he says with an easy smile. “Why don’t you sit down here while I finish up? We can sit in front of the TV again tonight if you want?”
“Sounds good.” There's nothing else to say is there? We’re not dating, we’re not sleeping together, we’re not even friends. He's cooking for me because I cooked last night, and we’re the only two here. It simply makes sense.
I sit there watching him move around the kitchen like he knows exactly what he's doing, while sipping my drink. I'm wishing I’d poured a shot of something into said drink now, but it is what is.
“Dinner is served,” he says with a flourish, and I look down at the plates to see he has in fact served up while I've been sitting here staring off into space.
“We don’t have to watch anything tonight if you don’t want to,” I say as we both settle into our respective sides of the couch.
“I'm putting on a movie we can watch together.”
“There you go being bossy again.”
“You have the choice, Angel, you can eat, then go do something else, or we can choose a movie together.”
“OK.”
“So, which is it going to be?”
“A movie, please,” I say, shoving a piece of steak in my mouth to stop me from saying anything else.
The only problem is, the steak is so damned good, I moan out loud.
I actually close my eyes, and moan around this piece of meat!
CHAPTER 13
Bennett
Geezus! For the love of all that’s holy! Fuck me!
“So,” I cough, because my voice gets stuck in my throat. “Steak is good then?”
“I'm not sure what you did to this meat, but yes, it’s amazing.”
I can't help smiling at her words, glad she's still got her eyes closed, because I can't deal with her sass as well as those noises.
“Thank you. Not everyone gets to taste my meat, so you're welcome.”
Her eyes snap open to meet mine. They blaze with fire, but I'm not sure whether it’s sexual heat or anger. I'm not willing to take the chance, so I look away.
“What do you feel like watching tonight?” I ask, trying to bury the heat in my veins.
I can feel my nerves crackling like water on a steel plate over a fire.
“No sex! Something where shit gets blown up!”
Message received loud, and clear.
We agree on an action movie, then settle in to watch it while eating. We don’t talk, even once we’ve finished eating, we sit in the relative silence of the movie.
I can hear the wind picking up, and the rain getting lighter. I think it might actually be snowing.
I gather our plates to take them into the kitchen, and the lights flicker. I fill the double sink with water while I'm here, just in case, then fill up a few water bottles as well.
“Do you think the power is going to go out?” Kassie asks, standing in the kitchen doorway.
