“Hey!” I try to protest, but he speaks before I can say anything else.
“Thanks for the tips, I’ll take them on board.” He winks at her, and opens the passenger door for me.
“I can do that myself you know,” I argue, even as settle myself into the seat.
“I am aware that you're more than capable of taking care of yourself, Kassie,” he says. “Everything except for your car apparently.” He mutters as he closes the door.
Leesa’s laughing as they speak to each other again, before he makes his way around the front of the car, and slides into the driver’s seat.
The car roars to life, and my window rolls down without me doing it. I hadn’t even looked to see how I would open it to be honest.
“See you later, gorgeous. You too, Kass.” Leesa waves, and I flip her the bird which cracks her up.
“Bye, Leesa.” Bennett echoes, a chuckle in his voice.
“Drive safely, and let me know when you get there!”
“Yes mum.” I promise. “Love you.”
“Love you too, snookums.”
“Are you ready to get this road trip moving?” Bennett asks, and I turn to face him.
“Let’s hit the road.”
As he pulls out of our driveway, I wave at Leesa until I can no longer see her. When I pull my arm inside the car, I rest my head back on the seat, and close my eyes. Grateful that the sun is shining, and I can wear my sunglasses. He won't know if I've fallen asleep, or I'm just staring out of the window.
CHAPTER 2
Bennett
When Max calledto ask me a favour, I never imagined that part of said favour would be spending two hours sitting in a car with his sister.
It went a little like, ‘hey man, what’s up? So, you know how we’re heading to my parents cabin? Yeah the caretaker was in an accident, he’s alright, but he can’t do all the usual things to get the place ready for us to stay in, and so I was wondering if you’d mind helping out? I would, but I can't get the extra time off.’
And, since we’ve been going there since we were kids, I said yes. Max, and I have helped his dad more times than I can count at the cabin.
Unfortunately, he wasn't done asking me for favours, because that’s when he dropped into the conversation that Kassie, his older sister, was having car problems, and had planned on going up early as well.
I closed my eyes, and groaned, hoping that he didn't hear me, and against my better judgement, I agreed to take Kassie with me.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Kassie, but that’s problem. I like Kassie a little too much, because she’s off limits as my best friends sister.
We hashed out the details. What time I'd be picking Kassie up, that she’d have the keys, and of course he told me to have a hot chocolate, and her favourite snacks for the road trip. Nothing that I didn't already know.
Before we hang up, Max thanks me again.
“Usually I would make her wait for me, but-”
“But she doesn’t want to wait.”
“You know Kass, if she can make a schedule, she will.”
“It’s fine, Max, of course she can come with me.” I close my eyes, grateful that my best friend can't see my fucking face while I talk about his sistercoming with me.
“Oh, you're a legend, Benny.” He lets out a long, loud sigh of relief.
“Yeah, I know Maxi.” Then we hang up, and it’s my turn to let out a long sigh.
