“Oh, I like this one, killers, and it’s got Ashton Kutcher,” River said.

When Marco and Shawn didn’t seem to know who that was, River pulled his phone out and began to tell them about him. It was a good distraction, even though he still had to remind himself periodically that everything was going to be okay because Nix was smart and wouldn’t do anything stupid. That was the one thing he needed to hold onto, and so he would.

Chapter Six

Nix

After finding out what they did the previous night, Nix couldn’t wait to get back to the woods. The only thing they’d told Dax and the other alphas was that they’d happened upon the warehouse where the omegas were kept and that they were able to discover that there were some omegas and pups there. But that they didn’t know much more than that. Maddox had kept his word and hadn’t told anyone about his connection, for which he was grateful.

The next morning after breakfast, the men jumped into the van and headed to the warehouse where the omegas were kept. The drive wasn’t a long one, so they got to the area in a good time and parked the van in the same spot Maddox had parked the night before. Before they got out of the vehicle, Dax turned around. It was obvious from the get-go who was in charge, but no one seemed to argue that. Dax was the one that had led them to Rose Hills, so it was only logical that he’d be the one in charge of everything this time.

“Okay, y’all know the drill, we all go home.” Dax met each of their gazes. “No doing anything stupid that’ll get you killed. You are to report to me whenever you have new intel. You know how this goes, gentlemen, watch each other’s backs. No hero shit, or there’ll be hell to pay. We do this as a team, and we all go back to Wildwood. Got it?”

“Got it,” everyone murmured.

“Okay. All of you hold back. I’m going to scout out the area and get a lay of the land. Hang tight right here.”

Nix’s tiger was getting impatient, he wanted to run in there, especially since he and Maddox had already gotten a lay of the land the night before, but he didn’t argue. He stayed back as Dax entered the woods. Nix waited it out, and Maddox tossed a look in his direction, their eyes meeting. His friend probably knew what he was thinking, but this was Dax. The man was cautious, but they trusted him to get them home. It was easier to allow Dax to survey everything.

After what seemed like forever, Dax stepped out of the woods. “Okay. There are three guards with visible guns guarding the area.” That was something Maddox and Nix hadn’t seen the night before, but it had been getting dark, and it was possible that their night formation was different. Or, they’d gone in thinking that they were safe to leave the area. Or, the fact was that Nix was so intent on locating his blood relatives that he’d failed to notice the obvious. Nix was confident that wasn’t the case because he was more alert than that. Dax continued, “There’s also a well-built man, and he’s talking to one of the omegas. I’m almost certain that’s Tre,” he said. The plan is, for now, that we station ourselves in two different locations. Maddox and Zander will be in location A. Nix and I will go to location B. I will point them out once we get to the main spot. Got it?”

They nodded, even though Nix would rather have been partnered with Maddox, mainly because Maddox already knew his story, but he’d accept Dax’s decision and focus on why they were there.

Dax led the way into the woods. Nix recalled the path from the night before and could have taken it with his eyes closed. He got to the trees, knowing that behind the trees stood his family and all the omegas that needed help to get out of there.

Dax motioned for Maddox, Zander, and Nix to come closer to him. “There’s a guard right there and up against the building,” he whispered. “ Maddox and Zander, you guys stay over here.” He then motioned with his head for Nix to follow him. They went around the path to the backside. “There’s a guard right on the other side of these trees.” He motioned and Nix crept up behind him. He pointed him out and Nix nodded. He was convinced that the guards hadn’t been there the night before. From their view, they could also see the two guards that were close to where Maddox and Zander stood. Nix looked around the outside of the warehouse, and he felt a little sad when he didn’t see the omega from the night before.

However, he did see several more omegas and pups running around outside, and up against the building, he spotted an omega who seemed to be deep in conversation with the alpha they supposed must be Tre. He was buff, just as Dax had described, and had a tattoo of a skull and crossbones on his right bicep.Ridiculous. Nix looked away from him, scouting the place for a sign of the omega he felt might be his kin. He wouldn’t take his eyes off the place until he managed to locate him again.

His eyes darted back to the alpha, he believed was Tre, who now stood alone. He had an idea. It was a crazy one, but he still wanted to try and convince Dax to give it a shot. He pulled back from his lookout to have a word with his teammate.

“I have an idea,” he said.

Dax nodded, then motioned with his head for Nix to follow him. They went back to where Zander and Maddox were keeping watch and asked them to follow after them. When they were a decent ways away, Dax stopped walking and turned to Nix. “What’re you thinking?” he asked.

Nix shifted from one foot to another. Now that he was there to tell each of them, doubts began to creep in. He took a second to make sure he was thinking logically and not letting his emotions guide him, “I think we need to get our foot into the door so we have a way in there and can learn more about what’s going on inside the building. Get more intel than we are able to make out from our current positions.”

“Okay … I’m listening,” Dax said.

“Why don’t I go in there and talk to Tre? I’ll say that I’m on the hunt for an omega, that I heard about his operation, and that I’m looking to pair someone up with some alphas. Maybe I can even tell him that I have a group of alphas ready and waiting to come on board and work with him?”

Dax stared at Nix, and he could imagine the thoughts that must be going through his friend’s mind, but then Dax nodded slowly. “That could work.”

Nix’s eyes widened. “You like the idea?”

Maddox looked just as surprised as Nix was. Dax just nodded. “Yeah, because that’ll at least get us in there and help us figure out a way to take down these sons of bitches. I know you, and I trust you to go about his strategically. I know you won’t take unnecessary chances, more so now, since you want to get back to your mate safe and sound.”

Nix nodded. “Right!” he said.

“Are you sure, though?” Maddox asked. “We’re basically throwing him in there. Any fucking thing could happen. River will have all our heads if anything happens to you!”

Nix shot Maddox a warning glare. Although his friend was right. “I swear I’ll be fine. I’m the one making the suggestion. Trust me. I won’t do anything risky.”

His friend glared right back, but all Nix could think was,Don’t mess this up for me.“I’ll be fine.”

“Maybe we wire him up so we can keep an eye on him; if things go south, he’ll have backup,” Zander suggested.

“Yes,” Maddox agreed.
