“Well, I knew you weren’t going to call him. You’re too stubborn just like your mother was. A little while ago, I borrowed your phone. You know, the one you never turn on. And I saw all the messages and voicemails. I wasn’t going to do anything with it. But today well…” Betty bit her lips and looked at Jai. “You know I would never do anything to hurt you?”

“Just spit it out Betty,” Jai said, “What did you do?”

“I called your alpha and told him you were in the hospital, but I didn’t tell him why I swear.”

Jai groaned and moved to sit up, “Oh my God. What did he say?” Jai asked, cursing the hopeful note in his voice.

“Well, he said he was on his way,” Betty admitted, “Please don’t be mad, Jai. I did what I thought was right.”

“It’s fine,” Jai said resignedly, “I would have needed to call him at some point. You just made it happen sooner.”

“If it makes any difference, he sounded frantic to hear you were in the hospital, and he said he would be here as soon as possible. That doesn’t sound like a man who doesn’t care, Jai.”

Jai sighed again and said, “Well, we have to wait and see now, don’t we?”
