CHAPTER 12

Gunner opened his eyes wondering what had awakened him. Gordy did his cute little snuffle and snuggle he often did when asleep, and Gunner couldn’t help but smile. Gods, a baby. They were having a baby. He had done his best to hide it, but fuck he was scared. What did he know about being a father? Give him a serial killer, arsonist, rapist…. Hell, it didn’t matter, and Gunner knew exactly what needed to be done. However, a baby? Hell he hadn’t ever even held one.

A scraping sound came from downstairs and Gunner went stiff. “Jamil, we have an intruder.”

Jamil peeled himself off Gunner’s back and grew. “How do you want to handle this?”

“You go outside and to Cobra’s window. Let him know we have an intruder, then do a sweep outside and make sure the only surprise we have is whoever’s downstairs. I’ll make my way to whoever made the stupid choice to come into our home.” Gunner stated angrily.

“What about Gordy? We can’t leave him unprotected.” Jamil insisted.

Gunner looked down, hating to wake their mate. “I’ll wake him and have him go into the closet. The second you’re done outside, return back here and guard our sentience.”

Jamil went to the window and opened it as far as it would go. He made himself small enough to fit out of the opening and flew to do as Gunner had ordered.

Going to the nightstand, Gunner pulled out his Glock and a couple of magazines he had kept in it for instances like this. Making his way as quietly to Gordy, Gunner used their mind link to try and wake his mate.“Gordy? Baby, I need you to wake up.”

Gordy’s head moved and his eyes flickered open slowly. He went to say something when Gunner put his finger to his mouth, saying in their link,“Don’t speak. We have an intruder. I need you to get inside the closet and wait until I return.”

“Oh hell no. You can’t make me go into a tiny area with no windows and no other means to get out.”

“Damn it, Gordy, you have to get out of sight. I can’t fight if I’m worried about you.”

Shaking his head, Gordy said,“I’m not saying I won’t hide, Gunner. I’m just saying I won’t hide in the closet. Jude told me if we got into any trouble to go to the attic. The door is just outside this room. I’ll go up there. At least there’s a window to the roof if I need it.”

“Fine. Stay behind me, Gordy. When you get up there, you stay there. I mean it. No heroics. You’re carrying our child and I will not have our baby at risk. I know you’re scared and the urge to protect your mate is strong, but I promise I can handle myself. I’m trained for this.”

“Gunner, I already know you’re good at what you do. Your job is out there, mine is in here.”Gordy said, placing his hand on his stomach.“I will put my protective instincts into keeping this baby safe.”

Unable to resist, Gunner gave Gordy a quick kiss.“I love you.”

“I love you too. If Jamil was here I would tell him how much I love him as well.”Gordy said, looking around,“Where is Jamil?”

“He went to warn Cobra and Gio, then to do a sweep to make sure we only have whoever’s downstairs.”

“I love you both as well. Now, can we focus on the intruder? I see no one else out here, Gunner, but I can feel something’s off. I see the door that goes to the pool is open, but I can’t see where the intruder might be inside the home. Cobra said to tell you he’s going to go downstairs. He already sent Gio to the attic and he suggests we have Gordy go there as well. Taco is up there with Gio.”Jamil stated anxiously.

Slowly and quietly Gunner made his way to the bedroom door, Glock in hand,“Okay, I’m taking him there now. I want you to keep checking outside. If your gut is telling you something’s off I think we should trust it. Your Spidey senses have never let us down before.”

“Gunner!”Cobra shouted into their link.

Gunner jerked at the sound of Cobra inside his mind. Shit, he completely forgot about the blood-brother link.“Cobra. I’m getting Gordy to the attic now. Did you find anything?”

“Fuck, dude, I’ve been trying to talk to you since Taco woke me when he heard someone breaking into the house. I got a hold of Pit, in case it was them, but he says they’re about fifteen minutes out. There’s no sign of anyone in the living room or kitchen. If the intruder is still here, he isn’t down here.”

“Well, shit. Okay, keep looking. I’ll get Gordy to the attic and be down there to help search.”Gunner said, opening the door and looking around.

Grabbing Gordy’s hand, Gunner raced to the door to the attic and opened it.“Get up there and stay quiet. I’ll be back for you as quickly as I can.”

Gordy gave a jerky nod, the fear clear to hear in his mind.“Be careful, Gunner. I’m not going through childbirth alone damn it.”

“Childbirth?”Cobra asked in confusion.

“Just focus on finding the intruder. I’ll explain it all to you later.”Gunner hissed out as he watched his sentience make his way up the stairs. Closing the door, he went cautiously down the steps trying to remain as stealth as possible.

He met up with Cobra in the kitchen, both men looked around. Cobra softly saying, “I don’t get it. The door is open, but I haven’t seen anyone. I looked everywhere. Maybe he heard me coming and took off?”

Shaking his head, Gunner said, “If he had stepped one foot out of the house Jamil would have been on him like a hawk with a mouse.”
