CHAPTER 5

Gunner knew he was laying it on a bit thick, but he needed Gordy to understand just how much danger he was in if he left Drago without him and his dragon by his side. He could tell by the look on the man’s face, he was getting Gunner’s point.

“I don’t want Bren hurt. Please. He was only being nice.” Gordy practically begged.

Gunner didn’t like hearing his sentience beg… at least, not when it came to other men’s names on his lips. However, he wouldn’t be adverse to hearing his name as Gordy begged him to go harder and deeper as they fucked.

“Get your head out of the bed and focus on our mate. He is truly upset and needs tending to.”His maharishi admonished.

“I’m trying, damn it, but between the lust I feel coursing through my veins and the sound of his begging only increasing that feeling, I’m doing everything in my power not to grab the man and bend him over the table right now.”

“I know, remember we are soul bonded, and although we don’t always feel each other, during strong emotions it’s hard not to feel the urges you speak of. However, this is neither the time nor the place. You must calm our mate, Gunner. I hear his breathing and heart rate both increasing. We don’t want him to freak out or have a panic attack right now.” His maharishi said harshly.

Knowing his dragon was right, Gunner clasped Gordy’s hand, saying, “You need to remember that Pit and Bren are mates. There is no way in hell he would ever hurt Bren. A sentience means everything to us, and all we want is for them to be safe, happy, and loved. Yes, Pit might be upset and he might even yell or talk harshly, but he won’t hurt him. I’ve already explained the circumstances to him so he knows his mate’s heart was in the right place. It’s just the execution that went a bit haywire.”

“O… Okay.” Gordy rasped out, then asked, “You keep using the word sentience and mate as if they’re the same thing. I thought you said that shifters are the ones with mates. Is there a difference between the two, and how would I know you’re my mate? Is it because I’m attracted to you, because if that’s the case, you could pick just about every man and woman in this establishment as your mate” Gordy said with a shrug.

Shaking his head, Gunner replied, “There’s a bit more to it than that, Gordy. Sentience is a mate, but also a bit more.”

Seeing Gordy open his mouth to speak, Gunner held up his hand. “Let me do my best to explain. It’s kind of difficult because I’m not a shifter, so I can’t exactly be sure I’m getting it right.”

“Let me give it a try, Gunner.” His maharishi said.

Gordy looked to Gunner’s forearm and listened as his dragon explained. “Mates to a shifter are discovered through scent. Tell me, what does Gunner smell like to you?”

Gordy blushed an adorable shade of red as he mumbled, “Sweet Potato Pie.”

Smiling, Gunner’s maharishi said, “He does favor anything with cinnamon and nutmeg. Anyway, you said when you smell him his scent arouses you, correct?”

Gordy nodded, and Gunner’s dragon said, “That is how a shifter discovers his mate. Tell me, Gordy. Have you dreamed about Gunner? Have you been trying to do something and struggled because you can’t get him out of your mind? Have you found yourself wanting to go and seek Gunner out just to make sure he’s okay?”

Gordy nodded, then whispered, “And you.”

Gunner watched as his maharishi smiled wide, “As we have for you, Gordy. The thing is, all of these are signs of a shifter finding his mate. As for us, we have a few things that tend to happen to us. First we are… for a lack of a better word… intrigued at first sight. Curious maybe is better. The thing is, once we see you we have an urge to get to know you… to get close. Then these feelings come on.”

“What kind of feelings?” Gordy asked.

Gunner said, “Well, I can tell you that the closer I get to you, the harder my cock gets.”

His dragon rolled his eyes, “It’s not all sexual. We both have this need to watch over you. We want you safe. We want to make you smile… laugh… and enjoy every day to its fullest. However, we worry about you constantly. Are you eating? Are you sleeping? Do you need help with the new business adventure you’re taking on? Why are you in Drago? Just how much danger are you in… you know what I mean?”

“An obsessive need to take care of me.” Gordy answered and Gunner knew his mate felt the same way.

Nodding, his dragon said, “Exactly. The thing is, as much as you might feel that, magnify that by two because for us… Gunner and I… well, we are soul bonded… connected. What we feel is magnified. So a sentience is a mate just…more. Does that make sense?”

Gordy nodded, “I think so.”

“The thing is, like shifters, those feelings don’t happen with just anyone. They only really happen with our mates. Yes, we want out brethren D.O.A. family to be safe, but we don’t obsess over it. I have slept on your roof since the day we met face to face.” Gunner’s maharishi said, surprising even Gunner.

“Really? Why?” Gordy asked in shock.

“Because, even though we have not gone through dragon heat, I know in my heart you are our sentience. I think the heat will come, but sometimes it takes time. For now, the need I have to keep you safe from harm, be near you every waking and non-waking moment, and to get to know my Gordy and hopefully have my Gordy want to know us.” The dragon explained.

“I… I do.” Gordy quickly said, then blushed that bright adorable red that Gunner loved to see. Gordy took a sip of water then continued, “I do want to get to know you. It’s just that I… I’m not real good with talking and stuff. I… I don’t always get my words to come out.”

Gunner’s dragon smiled. “You’ve been doing just fine so far. What you need to remember is that we are all nervous here, Gordy.”

“You are?” Gordy asked in surprise.
